BJP Dominates Gujarat Civic Polls, Sweeps All 15 Corporations with 6,400+ Seats

Massive mandate strengthens ruling party ahead of 2027 Assembly elections as opposition trails far behind

Gujrat, Apr 29 : The Bharatiya Janata Party delivered a resounding performance in Gujarat’s local body elections, securing an overwhelming mandate across multiple tiers of governance. The results reaffirm the party’s long-standing political dominance in the state, where it has remained in power since 1998.

The civic elections saw the BJP register its most decisive victory to date, winning all 15 municipal corporations and capturing approximately 6,472 out of more than 9,900 seats. Notably, over 730 seats were secured uncontested, highlighting the party’s deep-rooted organisational strength. Compared to the 2021 polls, where it had won 6,236 seats out of 8,470, the latest outcome marks a significant expansion in its electoral footprint.

Historic Sweep Across Grassroots Institutions

The electoral exercise, conducted on April 26, covered a vast network of local governance bodies, including 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. With over 41.8 million eligible voters, it stands as one of the largest grassroots democratic processes in the state.

While the BJP dominated the political landscape, the Indian National Congress remained a distant second, struggling to mount a serious challenge. The Aam Aadmi Party made only marginal inroads, failing to significantly alter the electoral balance.

In a noteworthy development, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the Samajwadi Party opened their accounts in Gujarat for the first time, marking a modest but symbolic entry into the state’s political arena.

Leadership Credits Grassroots Strength

Reacting to the results, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the outcome as the party’s “biggest-ever victory” in local body elections, attributing the success to strong grassroots mobilisation and sustained development efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also acknowledged the mandate, stating that the results reflect public trust in governance and development policies. He emphasised that the verdict reinforces the bond between the people of Gujarat and the BJP, while assuring continued focus on growth and progress.

Voter Participation Reflects Strong Engagement

The elections witnessed robust voter participation across categories. Municipal corporations recorded a turnout of 55.1%, while municipalities saw 65.53%. Participation was higher in rural segments, with district panchayats registering 66.64% turnout and taluka panchayats 67.26%.

Momentum Builds Ahead of State Elections

The sweeping victory provides the BJP with significant momentum as Gujarat prepares for its next Assembly elections, scheduled for late next year. The results not only consolidate the party’s grassroots network but also underscore its continued appeal among voters across urban and rural regions.
