Scooter Catches Fire Outside BSF Punjab Frontier Office
Chandigarh, May 5: Panic gripped parts of Punjab’s Jalandhar district on Tuesday evening after a scooter parked near BSF Chowk suddenly caught fire outside the headquarters of the Border Security Force’s Punjab Frontier. Several locals claimed they heard a loud blast-like sound moments before flames engulfed the vehicle.
The incident occurred around 8 pm on the busy stretch connecting Jalandhar city with the Amritsar-Delhi highway. Authorities immediately rushed to the spot and sealed off the area to prevent any untoward situation. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Police officials said the exact reason behind the fire has not yet been determined and investigations are continuing from all possible angles. The incident gained further attention due to the strategic importance of the area, located close to a major BSF establishment.
Scooter Catches Fire Near Busy Security Zone
According to officials, the scooter was parked near BSF Chowk when it suddenly burst into flames, creating panic among commuters and residents nearby. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise similar to an explosion, triggering concerns about security in the sensitive border state.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur reached the location along with senior police officials soon after the incident. Speaking to reporters, she said initial findings suggest that an Activa scooter caught fire, but authorities are still verifying all facts related to the case.
“We are examining the situation carefully. At this stage, it is too early to confirm whether there was any blast,” Kaur stated.
A police patrol team was already deployed in the area at the time of the incident, helping officials quickly secure the site.
Delivery Rider Identified, Family Shares Details
Police later identified the scooter rider as 22-year-old Gurpreet Singh. Family members said Gurpreet works as a parcel delivery worker and frequently visits the area as part of his daily routine.
According to a relative, Gurpreet was approaching his parked scooter when the vehicle unexpectedly caught fire. Shocked by the sudden flames, he immediately informed his father about the incident over the phone.
Officials confirmed that Gurpreet Singh is cooperating fully with investigators and has shared details about the sequence of events leading up to the fire.
Forensic Teams Examine Incident Spot
To ensure a thorough probe, authorities deployed forensic experts, bomb disposal personnel and a dog squad at the location. Investigators collected evidence from the site while examining whether the incident was caused by a technical fault or any other factor.
Commissioner Kaur said investigators are not ruling out any possibility at this stage. “We are checking every angle carefully. Any verified information will be shared officially,” she added.
Security around the BSF headquarters and nearby roads was tightened temporarily as investigators continued their examination late into the evening.
Eyewitnesses Recall Loud Sound
Several people present near the area described hearing a sharp sound moments before the scooter caught fire.
One local resident said he was standing near a traffic barrier when he heard a loud noise that resembled an explosion. The sound attracted public attention immediately, leading to confusion and panic in the crowded locality.
Despite these claims, police have not confirmed whether the noise was caused by an actual blast or by the scooter catching fire.
Political Reactions Intensify
The incident also triggered a political debate in Punjab, with opposition leaders criticizing the state government over concerns related to security and law enforcement.
Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring termed the incident alarming, especially considering Jalandhar’s proximity to important security installations. In a post on X, he claimed that such incidents raise serious concerns about safety in the border state.
Warring accused both the AAP-led Punjab government and the BJP-led Centre of failing to focus adequately on public security.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also questioned the state’s law and order situation. Referring to recent incidents in Punjab, he alleged that repeated explosions and security scares indicate growing vulnerabilities in the state’s security framework.
Investigation Continues
Police officials maintained that no final conclusion can be drawn until forensic analysis and technical inspections are completed. Authorities are expected to review CCTV footage from the area and conduct detailed questioning as part of the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, traffic movement near BSF Chowk resumed gradually after security teams completed the preliminary inspection of the site.
