Election Commission of India Cracks Down on Bengal Post-Poll Violence, Orders Immediate Arrests

CEC Gyanesh Kumar Directs Police, Central Forces To Arrest Trouble Makers Without Delay

KOLKATA, May 6: Amid rising tension following the West Bengal Assembly election results, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday ordered immediate action against individuals involved in post-poll violence and vandalism across the state.
The strong directive came after at least two people were reportedly killed in separate incidents linked to political clashes on Tuesday. Several party offices were also allegedly attacked and damaged in different districts, raising fresh concerns over law and order after the conclusion of the high-stakes assembly elections.
According to officials, the Election Commission instructed the West Bengal administration and security agencies to launch an aggressive security response in sensitive areas. Orders were issued to the chief secretary, director general of police, Kolkata police commissioner, district magistrates, and senior officers of central armed police forces to maintain round-the-clock surveillance and continuous patrolling.
“Those involved in inciting unrest or carrying out vandalism must be arrested immediately,” an official quoted the Chief Election Commissioner as saying during the high-level review.
The Election Commission also emphasised strict enforcement of law to prevent further escalation of violence. Authorities were asked to ensure quick intervention wherever political tension surfaces.
A senior police officer said security agencies have been placed on maximum alert following the EC’s instructions. Joint operations involving state police and central forces are being intensified to maintain peace in vulnerable regions.
The violence erupted shortly after the declaration of results for the West Bengal Assembly elections, which were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Vote counting was completed on May 4.
The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the 294-member assembly by winning 207 seats, bringing an end to the All India Trinamool Congress government’s uninterrupted 15-year rule in the state.
Election authorities said the situation is being monitored closely, and additional security deployment will continue in districts witnessing political tension as the new government prepares for the transition of power.
