Venice Biennale 2026 Opens Amid Art, Politics and Controversy
World’s leading contemporary art exhibition begins in Italy with participation from nearly 100 countries.
US, May 10 : The 61st edition of the prestigious Venice Biennale officially opened to the public in Italy on May 9, bringing together artists, curators and cultural representatives from around the world.
Held in Venice, the globally renowned contemporary art exhibition features participation from 99 countries and is expected to attract thousands of visitors during its multi-month run. The central theme of this year’s edition focuses on cultural identity, memory and global transformation through artistic expression.
However, the event opened amid controversy following disputes surrounding jury decisions and political positions connected to ongoing international conflicts. Several cultural groups criticized organizers over statements related to countries involved in war-related allegations, leading to heated debate within the global art community.
The exhibition’s chief curator, Koyo Kouoh, had envisioned a concept titled “In Minor Keys,” emphasizing overlooked narratives and marginalized voices in contemporary society. Her unexpected death before the opening cast an emotional shadow over the event, with collaborators completing the exhibition according to her vision.
Art enthusiasts praised the diversity of installations, multimedia presentations and experimental works showcased across Venice’s historic venues. Organizers believe the exhibition will continue serving as a platform for dialogue between cultures despite political disagreements.
Experts note that the Biennale remains one of the most influential global cultural events, shaping artistic conversations and reflecting wider international developments beyond the world of art itself.
