Eurovision 2026 Opens in Vienna Amid Political Boycotts and Controversy
Europe’s biggest music event begins under the shadow of geopolitical tensions and protests over participation issues.
VIENNA, May 13 : The 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 officially opened in Austria on May 12 amid growing political controversy, cultural boycotts and heightened security arrangements.
The annual international music competition, hosted in Vienna this year, began with its first semi-final featuring performers from across Europe and beyond. Organisers described the event as a celebration of unity through music, adopting the slogan “United by Music.”
However, the competition has faced criticism and protests linked to ongoing geopolitical conflicts and disagreements over participation rules. Several activist groups accused organisers of ignoring humanitarian concerns while others demanded stricter standards regarding political neutrality.
Security was tightened across Vienna as authorities prepared for demonstrations during the week-long event. Police maintained a visible presence around the arena and major public gathering points.
Despite the controversy, Eurovision continues to attract millions of viewers worldwide and remains one of the largest live entertainment broadcasts globally.
The event’s international jury this year includes acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook along with several prominent actors and artists from Europe and Hollywood.
Organisers also faced criticism over the use of artificial intelligence in certain festival-related productions and promotional material, sparking debate within the entertainment industry about ethics and creativity.
Fans nonetheless gathered in large numbers for opening ceremonies, concerts and cultural events across Vienna, boosting tourism and hospitality businesses in the Austrian capital.
Analysts said the political tensions surrounding Eurovision reflect a broader trend in which major international cultural events are increasingly influenced by global conflicts and ideological disputes.
The grand final is scheduled for May 16 and is expected to draw massive television audiences worldwide despite the controversy surrounding this year’s edition.
