PM Modi Scales Down Convoy, Pushes Fuel Saving Measures
Prime Minister calls for austerity, greater use of public transport and electric mobility amid global energy concerns
NEW DELHI, May 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated a major reduction in the size of his official convoy as part of a wider push towards austerity and fuel conservation, official sources said on Tuesday.
The revised arrangement was implemented during the prime minister’s recent visits to Gujarat and Assam following his address at a BJP rally in Hyderabad. Sources indicated that the changes were carried out without compromising mandatory security requirements laid down under Special Protection Group (SPG) guidelines.
Officials also revealed that Modi has encouraged the inclusion of electric vehicles in the convoy wherever feasible while avoiding additional expenditure on new vehicle purchases. The move is being viewed as a symbolic but significant step aimed at promoting responsible fuel usage at a time of global economic uncertainty and rising energy concerns.
During his speech in Hyderabad on Sunday, the prime minister stressed the need for responsible energy consumption in view of the ongoing instability in West Asia. He urged citizens to minimise dependence on petrol and diesel, prefer metro rail and public transport systems, adopt carpooling, and increase the use of electric mobility.
Modi also suggested greater reliance on railway networks for parcel transportation and encouraged work-from-home practices wherever possible to help reduce fuel imports and conserve foreign exchange reserves.
Government officials said several ministries are expected to review their transport and energy consumption patterns in the coming weeks. Departments may be encouraged to adopt hybrid and electric mobility solutions for official use while reducing unnecessary travel expenditure.
The prime minister’s remarks come amid concerns over volatility in international crude oil prices and disruptions in global supply chains caused by geopolitical tensions. Analysts believe that reducing fuel dependence and improving energy efficiency will remain among the Centre’s policy priorities in the coming months.
Political observers noted that Modi has often used symbolic gestures to reinforce public campaigns. The convoy reduction is likely to be projected as part of a broader message promoting disciplined governance and responsible public behaviour.
The BJP leadership has also intensified its outreach programmes focused on sustainability, clean energy, and urban transport reforms. Party leaders stated that citizens can contribute significantly to national economic resilience through small lifestyle changes.
Experts in urban mobility welcomed the emphasis on public transport and electric vehicles, saying such measures could help lower fuel imports, reduce pollution levels, and strengthen long-term energy security.
The latest austerity push is expected to spark discussions across states regarding administrative expenditure and sustainable governance practices.
