Indian Athletes Gear Up for Packed International Season
Badminton, athletics, shooting and wrestling contingents intensify preparations for major global tournaments in May
NEW DELHI, May 13: Indian athletes across multiple disciplines have entered a crucial phase of preparation as the country gears up for a packed international sporting calendar through May and June 2026.
With events in badminton, athletics, wrestling, shooting, chess and table tennis scheduled across Asia, Europe and Africa, sports federations have accelerated training camps and performance reviews to ensure strong participation from Indian contingents.
Officials from several national federations stated that the coming weeks are important for athletes targeting qualification pathways for future global championships and continental competitions. India’s sports ecosystem has witnessed increased activity with athletes competing in international ranking events and exposure tournaments.
The badminton circuit remains one of the biggest areas of focus, with Indian shuttlers preparing for tournaments in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Coaches believe these events will help players improve rankings and build momentum before larger championships later this year.
Athletics has also emerged as a major priority. The Athletics Federation of India is closely monitoring performances at domestic competitions as athletes prepare for Asian and international meets scheduled later this month. Sprint events, relay teams and field competitions are receiving particular attention from selectors.
Indian shooters are simultaneously preparing for World Cup events in Europe and Central Asia. Officials said recent investments in sports science, psychological training and advanced analytics have improved consistency among young competitors.
Wrestling federations are also finalising camps ahead of the Under-23 and Under-17 Asian Championships. Coaches indicated that emerging talent from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra could play an important role in India’s medal prospects.
Sports analysts noted that India’s sporting calendar has become increasingly demanding due to the growing number of international competitions involving Indian athletes. Improved infrastructure, private sponsorships and corporate support have helped federations send larger contingents abroad.
The government’s emphasis on sports development through schemes such as Khelo India and Target Olympic Podium Scheme has further strengthened athlete preparation systems.
Chess continues to be another area of rapid progress, with Indian grandmasters participating in major international tournaments across Asia and Europe. Experts believe India’s growing dominance in youth chess is likely to continue over the next decade.
Table tennis authorities are meanwhile reviewing performances after India’s mixed results at recent international events. Coaches stated that consistency against top-ranked nations remains a challenge but expressed confidence about long-term improvement.
Sports administrators believe the coming months could define India’s competitive trajectory ahead of future Olympic qualification cycles and global championships.
