Amit Shah Cuts Convoy Size Following PM Modi’s Fuel Conservation Call
Home Minister adopts austerity measure as Centre pushes sustainable practices amid global energy uncertainty
NEW DELHI, May 13: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has significantly reduced the number of vehicles in his official convoy following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for responsible fuel consumption and resource conservation amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Official sources said the convoy strength accompanying the Home Minister has been brought down to less than half as part of a wider government effort aimed at encouraging austerity and efficient use of fuel while ensuring that all mandatory security arrangements remain fully intact.
The move comes soon after Prime Minister Modi himself reduced the size of his convoy during recent visits to Gujarat and Assam. Officials stated that the changes in the Prime Minister’s security movement were implemented without affecting the Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols or other essential security measures.
Sources indicated that Modi’s decision was taken immediately after his address in Hyderabad, where he urged citizens to contribute towards strengthening the country’s economic resilience by reducing dependence on imported fuel and adopting sustainable lifestyle practices.
Following the Prime Minister’s appeal, Amit Shah also decided to streamline his convoy arrangement in support of the government’s conservation initiative. Officials maintained that security procedures continue to remain uncompromised despite the reduction in vehicles.
In another step towards promoting sustainability, the Prime Minister has directed officials to incorporate electric vehicles into his convoy wherever practical without making any fresh purchases. The initiative is intended to encourage cleaner mobility solutions while avoiding unnecessary expenditure.
Addressing a public gathering in Secunderabad earlier this week, Modi said patriotism in modern times extends beyond defending national borders and also includes responsible behaviour in daily life.
He emphasised that citizens could contribute to national interest through conscious lifestyle choices, particularly by lowering fuel consumption and reducing dependence on imported commodities.
The Prime Minister appealed to people to increasingly use public transport systems, metro services, car-pooling arrangements and electric vehicles to reduce petrol and diesel consumption.
Modi also highlighted the economic burden caused by imports of edible oil and urged households to minimise excessive consumption. He further encouraged farmers to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and gradually shift towards natural farming methods.
Government officials said the Centre is likely to continue promoting sustainable administrative practices and energy saving measures across departments in the coming months as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic stability and environmental responsibility.
