CBSE Schools Expand Mental Health Support Ahead of Board Reforms

Counselling services and wellness programmes strengthened to reduce exam stress among students

NEW DELHI, May 18: Schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have expanded mental health and counselling services as authorities prepare for major examination reforms aimed at reducing academic pressure on students.

School administrations in several states have introduced dedicated wellness centres, peer counselling groups and stress management workshops ahead of the new academic session. The initiative comes amid growing concern about anxiety and emotional challenges faced by students preparing for board examinations and competitive entrance tests.

Education experts noted that the increasing use of digital learning platforms and social media has intensified pressure on students to perform academically. In response, schools are organising awareness campaigns for parents and teachers to identify early signs of stress and emotional burnout.

CBSE officials recently reiterated the need for a more balanced education system focused on conceptual learning instead of rote memorisation. Proposed reforms include competency based assessments, flexible testing methods and periodic evaluation systems.

Psychologists working with educational institutions said regular counselling sessions have improved student confidence and communication skills. Some schools have also partnered with healthcare professionals to provide online emotional support services.

Parents have largely welcomed the initiative, saying students require stronger emotional support in a highly competitive academic environment. Experts believe the expansion of mental health programmes could help create healthier and more productive learning spaces.

The education sector is increasingly recognising that academic success must be linked with emotional well being and social development rather than examination performance alone.
