Flash Flood Threat in J&K as IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert Across Region
Meteorological Department warns of intense showers, strong winds and possible landslides in vulnerable hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Srinagar , June 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a spell of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated intense showers across several districts of the Union Territory.
According to officials, weather conditions are expected to remain unstable over the next 24 to 48 hours, with wind speeds likely reaching 40–60 kmph in some areas. The advisory has raised concerns over flash floods, mudslides and localized waterlogging, particularly in mountainous and low-lying regions.
The weather shift comes after several days of fluctuating summer conditions in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. Authorities have urged residents, farmers and travelers to exercise caution, especially in landslide-prone zones and near riverbanks.
Disaster management teams have been placed on alert to respond quickly to any emergency situation. Officials have also advised district administrations to monitor vulnerable areas closely and ensure timely evacuation if required.
In past years, similar weather patterns during early summer have led to disruptions in road connectivity, temporary power outages and damage to agricultural land. This year’s alert has once again highlighted the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events during the monsoon transition period.
Tourists visiting the Valley have been advised to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, local authorities continue to monitor river levels and hill stability to prevent any untoward incidents.
The IMD has stated that weather conditions may gradually improve after the current spell, but intermittent showers could continue in scattered pockets across the region.
