Mehbooba Mufti: Spirit of Kashmiriyat Is the Foundation of Unity
PDP chief urges people to view the annual pilgrimage as an opportunity to strengthen social harmony, promote Kashmir’s culture of hospitality, and support sustainable development in the region.
Srinagar, June 19: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday described the upcoming Amarnath Yatra as more than a religious pilgrimage, saying it serves as a vital platform for fostering trust, mutual respect, and stronger connections between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and visitors from across the country.
Speaking during an interaction with local stakeholders in Sonamarg, Mehbooba highlighted the historic role of Kashmir in welcoming guests and promoting coexistence. She said the Valley’s long-standing traditions of generosity, compassion, and respect for diverse communities continue to define its identity.
According to the PDP leader, residents of tourism and pilgrimage hubs such as Sonamarg and Pahalgam have consistently demonstrated warmth and hospitality toward travellers. She noted that this culture of openness reflects the essence of Kashmiriyat, which remains an enduring symbol of harmony and peaceful coexistence.
Mehbooba stated that the Amarnath Yatra provides pilgrims with an opportunity to witness the everyday life of Kashmir beyond stereotypes and misconceptions. She said visitors can experience the region’s rich cultural heritage, human values, and the welcoming nature of its people firsthand.
Emphasising the broader significance of the pilgrimage, she remarked that such interactions help build meaningful relationships and encourage greater understanding among people from different regions and backgrounds. The exchange of experiences, she said, can play an important role in reducing mistrust and strengthening national unity.
The former chief minister also stressed that every pilgrim returning from Kashmir should carry positive memories of the Valley’s culture, traditions, and hospitality. Such experiences, she added, contribute to creating a more accurate and balanced perception of the region.
Addressing the importance of communal harmony, Mehbooba said faith should inspire compassion, empathy, and cooperation rather than division. She underlined that people belonging to different religions and communities share common values and aspirations, making mutual respect essential for a peaceful society.
She further observed that preserving dignity, cultural identity, and religious freedom for all communities is crucial for maintaining social stability and strengthening democratic values.
Alongside social and cultural issues, Mehbooba drew attention to the need for balanced development in areas associated with the pilgrimage. She called for infrastructure projects that improve public facilities while ensuring that local communities receive direct economic benefits.
The PDP president advocated better road connectivity, enhanced civic amenities, and increased support for small businesses that depend on tourism and pilgrimage-related activities. She also stressed the importance of creating employment opportunities for young people in the region.
Highlighting environmental concerns, Mehbooba urged authorities to adopt sustainable development practices to safeguard the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. She said economic growth and environmental conservation must go hand in hand to ensure the long-term well-being of local residents and future generations.
Concluding her address, Mehbooba reiterated that the Amarnath Yatra represents an occasion to strengthen bonds among people, celebrate shared values, and showcase Kashmir’s tradition of hospitality and peaceful coexistence. She expressed hope that the annual pilgrimage would continue to serve as a symbol of unity, understanding, and cultural exchange.
