India and Germany Push Toward Energy Independence

At GSDP Conversation Series, both nations highlight renewable energy as key to climate action, economic growth, and energy security amid efforts to cut fossil fuel dependence.

India, June 20 : India and Germany have underscored their shared priority of reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels while accelerating the shift toward clean and sustainable energy systems.

German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann, speaking at the tenth edition of the GSDP Conversation Series themed “Energy Security through Renewable Energies”, said both countries face a common challenge in achieving greater energy independence through diversification of energy sources.

He noted that India has made notable progress in expanding its renewable energy capacity, with clean sources now accounting for around 26 percent of electricity generation. According to him, this transition reflects India’s strong policy push and growing investment in green infrastructure.

Ackermann further emphasized that renewable energy has moved beyond being just an environmental concern, describing it instead as a critical pillar of economic development, strategic security, and long-term sustainability. He said renewables represent a “trinity” of climate action, economic opportunity, and energy security.

The event was organized by the Indo-German Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development (GSDP) in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The dialogue comes at a significant time as India and Germany mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, reflecting the deepening scope of bilateral cooperation.

Over the years, the Indo-German development partnership has expanded from traditional cooperation into a broader framework focused on climate action and sustainable growth, with both nations increasingly aligning their efforts toward building resilient and low-carbon economies.
