Centre Unveils New National Mission to Accelerate AI Adoption Across Public Services
Government launches fresh digital initiatives to strengthen governance, healthcare, education and citizen services through responsible Artificial Intelligence
NEW DELHI, June 27: The Central Government has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap to accelerate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across public services, aiming to transform governance, improve service delivery and strengthen India’s digital economy. The latest initiative focuses on integrating AI-powered solutions into healthcare, agriculture, education, transportation and administrative systems while ensuring transparency, data security and ethical use of technology.
Officials said the programme seeks to position India among the world’s leading AI-driven economies by encouraging innovation, supporting indigenous technology development and expanding digital infrastructure. The mission will also promote collaboration between government departments, academic institutions, startups and private industries to develop AI applications suited to India’s diverse needs.
The government plans to establish additional AI Centres of Excellence in partnership with premier educational institutions to promote advanced research and skill development. These centres will work on developing AI models for Indian languages, improving digital accessibility and creating practical solutions for public welfare.
A major component of the initiative focuses on healthcare. AI-powered diagnostic systems will assist doctors in early disease detection, improve hospital management and support telemedicine services in rural and remote regions. Health experts believe that integrating AI into medical services can significantly reduce diagnosis time while improving treatment outcomes.
In agriculture, AI tools will help farmers monitor crop health, predict weather patterns, identify pest attacks and optimise irrigation. Real-time advisory systems are expected to improve productivity while reducing cultivation costs, particularly for small and marginal farmers.
The education sector is also expected to benefit through personalised learning platforms, intelligent assessment systems and multilingual digital content. AI-enabled classrooms will assist teachers in monitoring student performance and identifying learning gaps at an early stage.
Officials stated that digital governance will become more efficient through automated grievance redressal systems, document processing and citizen-centric online services. Government departments are expected to utilise AI to streamline workflows, minimise paperwork and improve transparency in public administration.
Recognising concerns regarding privacy and misuse of emerging technologies, the government has emphasised responsible AI practices. Strict safeguards for data protection, algorithm transparency and ethical deployment will remain central to the implementation framework. Training programmes for government officials will also be organised to ensure effective adoption of AI technologies across departments.
Industry representatives have welcomed the initiative, stating that India’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem provides an ideal platform for large-scale AI deployment. They believe the programme will encourage innovation, generate employment opportunities and strengthen India’s competitiveness in the global technology sector.
Experts noted that India’s growing startup ecosystem, increasing internet penetration and expanding digital infrastructure provide favourable conditions for AI-led economic growth. The government expects the initiative to contribute significantly towards improving productivity, enhancing public service delivery and supporting inclusive development over the coming years.
With Artificial Intelligence becoming a critical driver of future economic growth, the latest national mission represents another major step towards building a digitally empowered and technology-driven India capable of addressing complex governance and developmental challenges.
