Sergio Gor Shrugs Off Letterhead Dispute Amid Indo-Pacific Command Controversy

US ambassador says defence cooperation, trade and personal ties between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrate the enduring strength of bilateral relations despite controversy over the command's renaming.

New Delhi, June 30: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has dismissed concerns surrounding the decision to restore the original name of the US Indo-Pacific Command, asserting that the strength of the US-India partnership should be judged by concrete cooperation rather than symbolic changes.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit on Monday, Gor said the debate over the command’s name had overshadowed the broader reality of expanding military, economic and diplomatic engagement between the two democracies.

Responding to criticism over the removal of the word “Indo” from the command’s title, Gor said the focus should remain on America’s continued commitment to regional security and its close defence relationship with India.

“I don’t care what name is on the letterhead. What matters is what the United States is actually doing,” Gor remarked, stressing that military cooperation between Washington and New Delhi continues to grow at an unprecedented pace.

The controversy emerged after the US administration restored the historic name “US Pacific Command,” reversing a decision taken during President Donald Trump’s first term when it was renamed the Indo-Pacific Command to acknowledge India’s growing strategic importance in the region. Originally established in 1947, the command oversees a vast area stretching from the western coast of the United States to India’s western frontier.

Despite the administrative change, Gor insisted that America’s strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific remain unchanged.

He pointed out that India participates in more military exercises with the United States than any other nation, with regular exchanges involving soldiers, naval personnel and senior defence officials throughout the year.

According to Gor, bilateral defence engagement remains exceptionally active, with another Indian Navy delegation scheduled to visit the United States within the next two weeks, reflecting the depth of military collaboration.

Highlighting the broader relationship, the ambassador rejected claims that ties between Washington and New Delhi have weakened under the current administration.

He argued that critics focusing solely on symbolic developments were ignoring substantial progress in areas including defence cooperation, trade, investment, advanced technology and people-to-people exchanges.

“The facts clearly show that the relationship remains on a strong footing,” Gor said, adding that strategic cooperation continues to expand across multiple sectors.

The envoy also underlined President Donald Trump’s personal commitment to strengthening ties with India, describing the relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one built on mutual trust and long-standing friendship.

Recalling a recent episode during Trump’s visit to Miami for an Ultimate Fighting Championship event, Gor narrated how the US President spontaneously suggested calling Prime Minister Modi.

According to the ambassador, he reminded Trump that it was around 6 a.m. in India, but the President replied that Modi would likely already be awake.

Although the call was eventually rescheduled for the following day because Trump was preparing to appear at the sporting event, Gor said the incident illustrated the personal rapport shared by the two leaders.

He noted that genuine friendships often do not require elaborate planning and that Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a trusted partner whose relationship dates back to his first presidential term.

Gor added that Trump’s positive memories of India and his previous engagements with Modi continue to shape Washington’s approach toward strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Strategic analysts believe that while the renaming of the command has generated political debate, practical collaboration between the United States and India remains robust. Defence partnerships, joint military exercises, intelligence sharing and cooperation in emerging technologies continue to deepen as both countries work together to promote stability and security across the Indo-Pacific region.

The ambassador concluded by reiterating that the future of the US-India partnership would be determined not by administrative terminology but by sustained cooperation in defence, trade, technology and regional security, all of which continue to move in a positive direction.
