Ayodhya Donation Theft Incident Hurt the Faith of Ram Devotees, Says Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow, July 15: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday asserted that the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple was a deeply unfortunate episode that caused disappointment among devotees across the country. However, he maintained that isolated acts of wrongdoing should not be used to discredit the sanctity of the Ram Janmabhoomi or question the faith of millions of worshippers.

Speaking during the “Panchayat Aaj Tak” conclave organised by the India Today Group, the Chief Minister said the state government acted promptly after the temple trust sought an investigation into the allegations. He stressed that while the government respects the autonomy of the Ram Temple Trust, it fulfilled its responsibility by ensuring a transparent and impartial inquiry.

According to Adityanath, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust functions as an independent institution, and the government does not interfere in its internal administration. Once concerns regarding the handling of donations emerged, the trust itself requested an official probe, following which the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The Chief Minister said the SIT carried out a detailed investigation, and immediate legal action followed after the submission of its preliminary findings. Law enforcement agencies arrested several individuals allegedly involved in the financial irregularities, demonstrating the government’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

Adityanath revealed that six primary accused linked to the alleged theft were taken into custody, while two others suspected of assisting them were also arrested. He added that the developments reflected the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward corruption, regardless of where it occurs.

He also pointed out that the controversy had prompted senior members associated with the temple administration to step aside on moral grounds. Former Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned, describing the decision as an effort to uphold public confidence in the institution while investigations continue.

The Chief Minister observed that the resignations and arrests showed that corrective measures were being implemented without delay. He argued that responsible action had already been taken and that attempts to portray the incident as a reflection of the temple itself were unfair and politically motivated.

Launching a strong attack on opposition parties, particularly the Samajwadi Party, Adityanath accused them of exploiting a sensitive religious issue for political gain. He alleged that instead of appreciating the swift investigation and legal proceedings, some political leaders were attempting to damage the image of Ayodhya and the Ram Temple for electoral purposes.

According to the Chief Minister, criticism should remain focused on individuals found guilty of wrongdoing rather than targeting a sacred religious site that holds immense spiritual significance for millions of Hindus. He said linking the alleged misconduct of a few people to the broader religious movement surrounding the Ram Temple was neither fair nor responsible.

Adityanath further remarked that Ayodhya has become a symbol of India’s cultural heritage and spiritual revival, attracting devotees and tourists from across the world. He warned against narratives that seek to undermine the city’s reputation based on the actions of a limited number of individuals.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government has consistently maintained that anyone found guilty in the investigation would face strict legal consequences. He assured devotees that the administration remains committed to protecting both the integrity of the temple and public confidence in its management.

The alleged financial irregularities surfaced during the first week of June when concerns were raised regarding discrepancies in the counting and handling of donations received by the Ram Temple. Following these allegations, the Uttar Pradesh government established the Special Investigation Team to examine the matter comprehensively.

Investigators subsequently examined financial records, questioned individuals associated with the donation-counting process, and reviewed evidence related to the movement of temple funds. The inquiry eventually resulted in the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on June 25 based on the SIT’s preliminary findings.

Officials confirmed that eight individuals connected with the donation collection and counting process have so far been arrested in connection with the case. The investigation continues as authorities seek to identify any additional persons who may have been involved in the alleged embezzlement.

The case has generated widespread public attention because of the Ram Temple’s religious significance and the enormous volume of donations it receives from devotees across India and abroad. Many observers have called for stronger financial oversight and more transparent auditing mechanisms to safeguard contributions made by worshippers.

The state government has maintained that the investigation is being conducted strictly according to legal procedures without political interference. Authorities believe the ongoing inquiry will help strengthen administrative systems and reinforce public trust in the management of one of India’s most revered religious institutions.

Adityanath concluded by appealing to citizens to distinguish between criminal acts committed by individuals and the spiritual importance of the Ram Temple. He said justice would be delivered through due process while the sanctity and dignity of Ayodhya would continue to be protected.
