‘La La Land’ Unveils Updated Poster Correcting Ryan Gosling’s Hand for 10th Anniversary
The revised artwork subtly changes Ryan Gosling's hand position, nearly a decade after the actor admitted he regretted improvising the original dance pose that became the film's official poster.
LOS ANGELES, July 22: As La La Land prepares to return to cinemas for its 10th anniversary, fans have spotted a subtle but meaningful change to the film’s iconic poster. The updated artwork corrects Ryan Gosling’s hand position during the famous dance sequence, addressing a detail the actor has publicly regretted for years.
The Academy Award winning musical, directed by Damien Chazelle, is set for a special theatrical re-release beginning August 16, 2026. To mark the occasion, the filmmakers unveiled a refreshed version of the poster with the caption, “A minor adjustment,” hinting at the small but noticeable alteration.
In the revised design, Gosling’s raised hand has been repositioned to match the intended choreography and mirror Emma Stone’s pose. The change also comes alongside a darker visual tone compared with the original promotional artwork.
The adjustment follows comments Gosling made in 2024, when he admitted he had improvised the hand placement while filming the dance sequence. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the actor recalled that the choreography originally required both performers to raise their hands similarly, but he decided to flatten his hand because he believed it looked more stylish.
Despite being advised against the change, Gosling went ahead with it, only to discover later that the same frame became the movie’s official poster. Looking back, he joked that the decision had continued to bother him long after the film’s release.
Referring to the image as “La La Hand,” Gosling said he now believes the intended pose would have better preserved the energy and symmetry of the scene, adding that the altered hand position remains one of his biggest visual regrets from the film.
Released in 2016, La La Land became one of the most celebrated musicals of the decade. The film earned widespread critical acclaim, winning a record seven Golden Globe Awards and six Academy Awards, including honours for Best Director and Best Cinematography.
The story follows jazz pianist Sebastian and aspiring actress Mia as they pursue their dreams while navigating the challenges of love, ambition and sacrifice in Los Angeles. Featuring memorable performances by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the romantic musical continues to be regarded as a modern classic and remains a favourite among audiences worldwide.
With the corrected poster now unveiled, the anniversary re-release offers longtime fans another reason to revisit the beloved film on the big screen.
