Commonwealth Games 2026 Begin in Glasgow, Indian Athletes Eye Medal Success
Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu and other stars lead India's medal hopes as multi-sport event opens in Scotland
Mumbai, July 23 : The Commonwealth Games 2026 officially began in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 23, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth nations for one of the biggest multi-sport events of the year. India enters the competition with high expectations and a strong group of athletes aiming to secure medals across multiple disciplines.
Indian sporting stars including Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu, and boxing champion Lovlina Borgohain are among the leading names expected to carry the country’s medal hopes.
The 2026 edition features a revised format with a reduced number of sports compared to previous Commonwealth Games. Several traditional events, including cricket, hockey, badminton and wrestling, are not part of this year’s programme, which has created disappointment among fans and athletes.
Despite the changes, India’s contingent remains optimistic about delivering a strong performance. Athletics, weightlifting, boxing and shooting-related events are expected to be key areas where Indian athletes will aim for podium finishes.
The tournament will also provide young Indian athletes an opportunity to gain international experience and compete against some of the world’s best performers.
With a mix of established champions and rising talents, India’s campaign at Glasgow 2026 is expected to be closely followed by sports fans across the country.
