President Murmu Concludes Three Nation Europe Tour, Departs for New Delhi

Bucharest (Romania), July 25: President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday wrapped up a landmark three-nation visit to Europe, completing a diplomatic mission that reinforced India’s growing engagement with Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The visit focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, defence, innovation, education and people to people exchanges.

The tour covered Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania, reflecting India’s commitment to building stronger political and economic partnerships with emerging European partners. During the visit, President Murmu held extensive discussions with political leaders, business representatives and members of the Indian diaspora before departing for New Delhi.

Historic Visit to Moldova Opens a New Chapter

President Murmu began her European journey with a State Visit to Moldova on July 20, becoming the first Indian Head of State to visit the country since diplomatic relations were established.

During her meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, both leaders reviewed the complete spectrum of bilateral relations and identified several sectors for enhanced cooperation. The discussions highlighted opportunities in agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, logistics, infrastructure and technological innovation.

The two nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening economic engagement and encouraging greater institutional collaboration in areas that support sustainable development. Officials also explored possibilities for increased exchanges in education, culture and digital transformation.

The visit was viewed as an important milestone in India’s outreach to Eastern Europe, laying the foundation for deeper cooperation in the years ahead.

North Macedonia Visit Boosts Economic Cooperation

Following the Moldova visit, President Murmu travelled to North Macedonia from July 21 to 22, becoming the first Indian President to visit the Balkan nation.

During bilateral talks with President Gordana Sijanovska-Davkova, both countries agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade while expanding cooperation across several promising sectors.

Tourism, hospitality, filmmaking, information technology and investment emerged as key areas where both governments expressed interest in strengthening partnerships. The leaders also emphasized increasing business interaction and encouraging private-sector participation.

Delegation-level discussions focused on improving commercial ties while exploring new opportunities in innovation and skill development.

Address to Parliament and Business Leaders

A significant highlight of the North Macedonia visit was President Murmu’s address to the Assembly of North Macedonia, where she reaffirmed India’s commitment to democratic values, inclusive development and international cooperation.

She also inaugurated the India–North Macedonia Business Forum, encouraging entrepreneurs and investors from both countries to identify new avenues for trade, manufacturing and technology partnerships.

The forum brought together business leaders and government representatives who discussed practical measures to improve commercial connectivity and investment opportunities.

Romania Visit Revitalises Longstanding Partnership

President Murmu reached Romania on July 23 for a visit widely regarded as another historic milestone. It marked the first visit by an Indian Head of State to Romania in more than thirty years, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.

During her meeting with Romanian President Nicusor Dan, both leaders reviewed strategic cooperation and agreed to pursue an ambitious roadmap aimed at doubling bilateral trade within the next three years.

Defence cooperation, technology partnerships, manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure development and economic collaboration featured prominently during the discussions.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors while encouraging closer institutional engagement between both governments.

Wide-Ranging Talks With Romanian Leadership

Besides meeting President Dan, President Murmu also held extensive discussions with Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on strengthening bilateral cooperation across political, economic and strategic domains.

The talks covered trade expansion, investment promotion, industrial collaboration, education, digital innovation and regional connectivity.

Both sides expressed confidence that growing economic engagement and stronger business partnerships would further elevate India-Romania relations in the coming years.

Business Forum Highlights Investment Potential

Addressing the India–Romania Business Forum in Bucharest, President Murmu encouraged companies from both countries to take advantage of expanding economic opportunities.

She highlighted India’s rapidly growing economy, large consumer market, skilled workforce and manufacturing capabilities while inviting Romanian businesses to participate in India’s development journey.

The business forum focused on enhancing investment flows, promoting industrial cooperation and strengthening partnerships in emerging sectors including clean energy, information technology and advanced manufacturing.

Parliamentary and Diaspora Engagements

During the Romania visit, President Murmu interacted with members of the India-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group, underlining the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties.

She also met members of the Indian community residing in Romania and appreciated their contribution to strengthening cultural and economic links between the two countries.

Romania is home to more than 13,500 Indians, including nearly 10,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers employed across various sectors. The President praised the diaspora for acting as a bridge between India and Romania while preserving Indian traditions abroad.

Honorary Doctorate Recognises Global Leadership

One of the most notable moments of the visit came when President Murmu was awarded the prestigious Doctor Honoris Causa by the Bucharest University of Economic Studies.

The honour, considered the institution’s highest academic recognition, is presented to distinguished personalities who have made exceptional contributions to public service, education and international cooperation.

The university acknowledged President Murmu’s leadership, commitment to inclusive development and efforts to strengthen global partnerships.

In her remarks after receiving the honour, the President emphasized the transformative role of education, knowledge-sharing and international academic collaboration in addressing global challenges.
