Uttarakhand BJP Chief Apologises After Remarks on Students Trigger Public Outrage
Mahendra Bhatt expresses regret after Congress accuses him of insulting students protesting alleged exam irregularities, BJP says his comments were taken out of context.
Dehradun, July 27: Uttarakhand BJP president Mahendra Bhatt has issued a public apology after his remarks about students protesting alleged examination irregularities triggered widespread criticism and intensified the political battle in the state. The controversy erupted in the wake of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the NEET paper leak issue, with opposition parties accusing Bhatt of making insensitive comments towards students demanding accountability.
In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, Bhatt expressed regret over his choice of words and said he never intended to offend anyone. He stated that if his comments or the manner in which they were delivered had unintentionally hurt public sentiments, he sincerely apologised.
The BJP leader maintained that his remarks had been misunderstood and insisted that he did not use the offensive language being attributed to him. He accused political opponents of presenting his statement in a misleading manner to create unnecessary controversy.
Congress Intensifies Attack
The Congress strongly criticised Bhatt following the circulation of a video clip from his Saturday remarks. Party leaders alleged that the BJP leader had insulted thousands of students and young people who have been raising concerns over repeated examination irregularities in Uttarakhand.
State Congress president Ganesh Godiyal said Bhatt’s comments reflected the ruling party’s attitude towards students demanding transparency in recruitment and entrance examinations. According to him, the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan had unsettled BJP leaders, leading to irresponsible public statements.
Godiyal also recalled that former minister Premchand Aggarwal had earlier stepped down after facing criticism over controversial language, arguing that public representatives must exercise restraint while addressing sensitive issues.
Warning of Student Protest
The Congress warned that if Bhatt had failed to apologise, students and youth organisations would have organised a sit-in protest outside his residence. Opposition leaders claimed that students seeking fair examinations deserve respect rather than criticism from those holding public office.
Following the growing backlash, Bhatt released a video message reiterating that his comments were being deliberately distorted. He emphasised that he had never intended to insult students and appealed for an end to what he described as politically motivated misrepresentation.
BJP Defends State President
The BJP stood firmly behind Bhatt despite the controversy. State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the opposition had selectively interpreted the remarks to generate political mileage.
According to Chauhan, Bhatt’s statement was taken out of context and did not contain the meaning alleged by the Congress. He accused the opposition of attempting to divert attention from substantive issues by creating unnecessary controversy.
Exam Leak Issue Remains Politically Sensitive
The political dispute comes at a time when allegations of examination irregularities continue to dominate public discourse in Uttarakhand. Recently, an alleged question paper leak at Uttarakhand Technical University renewed concerns over the integrity of recruitment and academic examinations in the state.
The Congress has repeatedly targeted the Pushkar Singh Dhami government over alleged lapses in recruitment processes, accusing it of failing to protect the interests of students and job aspirants.
The state government, however, has maintained that it follows a strict zero-tolerance policy against examination malpractice. Officials have highlighted the implementation of a stringent anti cheating law and stated that multiple accused individuals involved in paper leak cases have already been arrested and sent to jail.
With the controversy now drawing both political and public attention, the debate over accountability in examination systems is expected to remain a key issue in Uttarakhand’s political landscape.
