Char Dham Yatra Halted for Two Days Due to Safety Concerns
Authorities halt pilgrimage across Uttarakhand after multiple route blockages, prioritising the safety of thousands of devotees.
Dehradun: The Uttarakhand administration has temporarily suspended the Char Dham Yatra for two days following continuous rainfall, landslides and weather warnings that have disrupted several pilgrimage routes across the Himalayan state.
Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop announced that the annual pilgrimage will remain suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims travelling to the four sacred shrines.
According to officials, persistent rainfall has triggered landslides at multiple locations, leading to road blockages along key stretches of the Char Dham route. The damaged roads and unstable terrain have made travel hazardous, prompting authorities to halt further movement until conditions improve.
The India Meteorological Department has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for parts of Uttarakhand, raising concerns over additional landslides, flash floods and falling debris in vulnerable mountainous regions. Disaster management teams and road maintenance agencies have been deployed to monitor the situation and restore connectivity wherever possible.
Officials have advised pilgrims already in the region to remain at designated safe locations and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities. Travellers planning to begin the pilgrimage have been urged to postpone their journey until fresh advisories are released.
The administration said road-clearing operations will continue over the next two days, while weather conditions will be reviewed regularly before a decision is taken on reopening the pilgrimage routes.
Authorities emphasised that the suspension is purely a safety measure and that the Char Dham Yatra will resume only after the affected roads are cleared and experts confirm that travel conditions are safe for devotees.
Every year, lakhs of pilgrims undertake the Char Dham Yatra to visit the revered shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. However, the pilgrimage frequently faces weather-related disruptions during the monsoon season due to the fragile Himalayan terrain and the risk of landslides.
