Maryland Governor Praises Telugu Community’s Role in State’s Growth
Wes Moore highlights the community’s influence in technology, healthcare, business and education at the American Telugu Association convention in Baltimore.
Marylan, Aug 03 : Maryland Governor Wes Moore has praised the Telugu community for its significant contribution to the state’s growth, describing it as a key force behind Maryland’s rise as a centre for technology, healthcare, business and academic excellence.
Speaking at the valedictory session of the 19th American Telugu Association (ATA) conference in Baltimore, Moore acknowledged the achievements of Telugu professionals and entrepreneurs, saying their contributions have strengthened Maryland’s economy and enriched its diverse communities.
The Governor also recognised the leadership of Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Katragadda Miller, who was born in Hyderabad. Moore and Miller created history in 2022 by becoming Maryland’s first elected Black Governor and the state’s first woman of colour to serve as Lieutenant Governor.
Addressing thousands of delegates gathered for the three day convention, Moore said the Telugu diaspora continues to play a vital role in advancing innovation, research, higher education and business development across the state.
The conference brought together Telugu families from across the United States and featured participation from several prominent political leaders and dignitaries. Among them were Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and several legislators from Telangana.
The cultural programme also included performances and appearances by celebrated personalities from the Telugu film industry, including veteran actor Rajendra Prasad and playback singer Sunitha Upadrashta, adding to the festive atmosphere of the gathering.
Established in 1991, the American Telugu Association has grown into one of the largest Telugu organisations in North America. The organisation works to promote education, youth empowerment, cultural heritage, healthcare awareness, scholarships, humanitarian assistance and community service, supporting thousands of Telugu families across the United States.
