Akshay Kumar to Portray Rajesh Khanna in R.D. Burman Biopic

The actor is reportedly set to take on the role of the legendary superstar in Farhan Akhtar and Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming musical biopic.

MUMBAI, Aug 11: Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is reportedly set to portray legendary actor Rajesh Khanna in an upcoming biopic centred on celebrated music composer R.D. Burman.

The project is being developed by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and director Neeraj Pandey, bringing together two prominent names from contemporary Hindi cinema for a story rooted in one of the most influential musical eras of Bollywood.

According to a report published on August 10, Kumar has been approached to play Khanna, the superstar whose remarkable run during the late 1960s and 1970s established him as one of Hindi cinema’s biggest icons.

Khanna’s career was closely associated with some of the most memorable musical films of his generation, while Burman transformed Hindi film music with his experimental arrangements, distinctive rhythms and innovative sound.

Kumar’s reported casting has generated interest because the role would require him to recreate the screen presence and personality of an actor who enjoyed extraordinary popularity during Bollywood’s golden era.

The collaboration also marks an interesting combination of mainstream stardom and a period based musical narrative. Farhan Akhtar, who has previously explored music driven storytelling, is expected to bring the world of Burman’s career to a new generation of viewers.

Neeraj Pandey’s involvement adds another layer to the project, with the filmmaker known for handling character driven stories against detailed real-world settings.

Further details regarding the film’s title, supporting cast, production schedule and release date are awaited. The project is nevertheless emerging as one of the more closely watched Bollywood biographical films currently in development.
