DARWIN: Bangladesh created history on Sunday by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test in Darwin, recording their first ever Test victory against the hosts on Australian soil.
The visitors chased down a modest target after Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings. Bangladesh had taken a commanding first-innings lead after posting 426, leaving the hosts under sustained pressure throughout the contest.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a decisive role with the ball, claiming five wickets in Australia’s second innings and repeatedly disrupting the home side’s attempts to recover.
Cameron Green offered Australia’s strongest resistance, producing a fighting century as the hosts tried to set Bangladesh a challenging fourth-innings target. However, the lower order could not provide enough support, and Australia were eventually dismissed for 284.
Bangladesh required only 57 runs in their final innings and completed the chase with nine wickets in hand. The result represents a landmark achievement for the visitors and a major setback for Australia in the opening match of the two-Test series.
Australia’s bowling attack had earlier received a major boost when Josh Hazlewood reached 300 Test wickets during the match. He became the ninth Australian bowler to achieve the milestone, adding an individual landmark to an otherwise disappointing result for the home team.
The defeat gives Bangladesh valuable momentum ahead of the second Test, while Australia will need to regroup quickly before the series moves to Mackay later in August.
