H1N1 Cases Rise as Children and Elderly Face Higher Health Risks
More than 1,777 H1N1 infections have been recorded this year as medical experts stress vaccination and preventive measures for vulnerable people.
NEW DELHI, Aug 25: The rise in H1N1 infections in the national capital has raised concern among doctors, who have urged people to take greater precautions, particularly those at higher risk of developing serious complications.
Children, older adults, pregnant women and people living with chronic health conditions are considered more vulnerable to severe influenza related illness, health experts said.
Delhi has reported more than 2,300 Influenza-A cases so far this year, including over 1,777 H1N1 infections recorded until Friday, according to data from the health department. As many as 114 H1N1 cases were reported on Thursday alone.
Doctors said the increase highlights the importance of recognising influenza symptoms early and taking preventive steps to reduce transmission, particularly among vulnerable groups.
“The rise in H1N1 cases has brought preventive vaccination back into the conversation,” said Dr Bharat Gopal, senior director of respiratory and sleep medicine at Medanta Mediclinic, Defence Colony and Medanta-The Medicity.
Medical experts have also stressed the importance of maintaining basic precautions during periods of increased influenza activity. Avoiding close contact with people who are unwell, maintaining hand hygiene and seeking medical advice when symptoms become severe can help reduce the risk of complications.
Children and elderly people may require closer monitoring because influenza can progress more seriously in individuals with weaker immune responses. Pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions may also face greater risks from respiratory infections.
Doctors have advised people experiencing persistent fever, breathing difficulty, worsening cough or other concerning symptoms to consult healthcare professionals rather than ignoring them.
The renewed focus on vaccination comes as seasonal influenza continues to place pressure on healthcare services. Experts have said vaccination decisions should be discussed with a qualified medical professional, particularly for people belonging to vulnerable categories.
Health authorities and doctors are continuing to monitor the situation as the number of reported infections increases in Delhi.
