Over 61,000 Indians Await Kidney Transplants Amid Major Organ Shortage
A parliamentary panel has highlighted the widening gap between demand and the availability of donor organs, calling attention to the country's transplant burden.
New Delhi, Aug 27: More than 61,000 patients in India are currently waiting for kidney transplants, highlighting the significant gap between the country’s demand for organs and the number of procedures being performed, according to a report by a parliamentary standing committee.
The report puts the number of people awaiting kidney donations at 61,668. The figure is nearly five times the number of kidney transplant procedures carried out in the country as of February 9, underscoring the scale of the challenge facing patients with advanced kidney disease.
Kidney failure can leave patients dependent on regular dialysis while they wait for a suitable donor. For many patients, transplantation can provide a longer-term treatment option, but the availability of organs remains a major constraint.
The parliamentary panel’s findings have renewed focus on the need to strengthen organ donation programmes and improve awareness about deceased donation. Increasing the pool of registered donors could help reduce the long waiting periods faced by patients requiring life saving transplants.
Healthcare experts have also stressed the importance of improving transplant infrastructure and ensuring that potential donors and their families have access to clear information about the donation process.
The shortage is not limited to the availability of organs alone. Patients may also face challenges related to compatibility, medical fitness, access to specialised transplant centres and the long-term costs associated with treatment.
The figures underline the need for coordinated efforts involving government agencies, hospitals, medical professionals and the public to expand organ donation and make transplantation more accessible to patients across the country.
