Prithviraj Sukumaran Highlights Malayalam Cinema’s Different Approach

Mumbai, Sept. 15: Actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran has highlighted the distinctive working style of the Malayalam film industry, saying its direct and collaborative approach can help filmmakers deliver ambitious projects without relying entirely on enormous budgets.
Speaking at the 16th edition of Expresso in Mumbai, Prithviraj discussed differences between Malayalam filmmaking and Bollywood. He pointed to the Malayalam industry’s informal and straightforward working environment as one of its major strengths.
According to the actor, Malayalam cinema has steadily expanded its scale while maintaining production efficiency. He noted that successful films can be made without necessarily depending on the massive budgets and elaborate casting structures often associated with mainstream Bollywood productions.
Prithviraj’s comments come at a time when regional Indian cinema continues to attract national and international attention. Malayalam films in particular have built a reputation for combining strong storytelling with controlled production costs and diverse subjects.
The actor-filmmaker suggested that the Hindi film industry could benefit from adopting some of these practices, particularly when it comes to collaboration, decision making and resource management.
His remarks have added to the ongoing discussion about changing production models in Indian cinema, where audiences are increasingly responding to content from different regional industries.
