Rumesh Pathirage Claims World Ultimate Championship Gold
Sri Lankan thrower produces another outstanding performance in Budapest, defeating Anderson Peters and Julian Weber to claim the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship title.
Budapest, Sept. 15: Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Pathirage capped a remarkable season by winning the men’s javelin title at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship with a huge throw of 91.09 metres in Budapest.
Pathirage’s winning effort put him comfortably ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who finished second with 86.18 metres, while Germany’s Julian Weber took third with 85.89 metres.
Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fifth with a season-best 81.49 metres. The result further underlined Pathirage’s remarkable consistency during the 2026 season.
The Sri Lankan has now established himself among the leading figures in world javelin, recording multiple victories on the international circuit. His 91.09m effort was his third throw beyond the 90-metre mark this season.
Pathirage’s rise is particularly notable because of his sporting background. He played cricket during his younger years before turning his attention to javelin, eventually developing into one of Sri Lanka’s most successful athletics prospects.
The victory in Budapest also earned Pathirage a reported $150,000 prize and strengthened his ambitions of competing for Olympic gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
His latest performance adds further momentum to a season in which he has repeatedly challenged the world’s leading throwers and established himself as a serious contender on the international stage.
