India Women Eye Second Straight Asian Games Cricket Gold Against Sri Lanka

Nagoya, Sep 22: The Indian women’s cricket team will take on Sri Lanka in the gold-medal match of the 2026 Asian Games on Tuesday, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s side seeking to retain the title it won at the previous edition.

India reached the final after a strong campaign in Aichi-Nagoya. The team began its knockout run with an eight-wicket victory over hosts Japan in the quarter-finals before producing another dominant display against Bangladesh in the last four, winning by 114 runs. Sri Lanka also booked its place in the final with a convincing run through the competition.

The summit clash at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am IST. The match represents India’s first opportunity to open its gold-medal account at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. India had entered September 22 with six medals four silver and two bronze  from the opening stages of the competition.

For India, the contest also provides an opportunity to continue the success the women’s team enjoyed at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where cricket made a return to the programme and India won the women’s gold medal.

The road to the final has been relatively short but demanding. India’s quarter-final against Japan was controlled by the batters after the bowlers restricted the hosts, while the semi-final against Bangladesh saw the Indian side produce a much larger total before dismissing its opponents for 81. India posted 195 for four in that match and then completed the victory with a 114-run margin.

The final will bring India up against a Sri Lankan side that has also shown considerable strength during the tournament. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the second semi-final after chasing down 177, setting up another meeting with India in a major women’s cricket final.

The contest also brings together two familiar rivals. India and Sri Lanka met in the Women’s Asia Cup final earlier in September, adding another layer to Tuesday’s meeting. The Indian team will enter the game with confidence from its recent performances, while Sri Lanka will look to produce a different result on the Asian Games stage.

India’s campaign has been built around a combination of experienced international players and a squad accustomed to playing high-pressure T20 cricket. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur provides leadership in the middle order, while the side has several players capable of changing the momentum of a short-format game with either bat or ball.

The final is also part of a busy day for the Indian contingent. Alongside the cricket team, Indian athletes will compete in shooting, wushu, badminton, hockey, kabaddi and other disciplines as the Games enter another important phase. The women’s cricket final, however, is among the day’s most closely followed medal events because of the possibility of India’s first gold of the competition.

India’s badminton teams are also scheduled to face Japan in the quarter-finals, while the men’s hockey team will meet Sri Lanka in a Pool A fixture. Shooting and wushu provide additional opportunities for Indian athletes to move into medal contention.

The cricket final therefore carries significance beyond the result itself. A victory would allow India to successfully defend its Asian Games women’s cricket crown and add the contingent’s first gold medal of the 2026 edition.

For Sri Lanka, the match offers a chance to claim the women’s cricket title after reaching the final through an impressive knockout campaign. The team will also have the confidence of having successfully chased a sizeable target against Pakistan in the semi-final.

The limited-overs format leaves little margin for error. A strong start with the bat, disciplined bowling during the middle overs and effective fielding could prove decisive. Both teams have already demonstrated that they can dominate opponents, making the final a meeting between two sides that arrive with momentum.

India’s immediate objective is clear: repeat the performance that took the team to the title at the previous Asian Games. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will attempt to stop that run and claim the gold medal for itself.

With the final scheduled in Nisshin on Tuesday morning, attention will turn to the Indian women’s team as it seeks to convert its strong tournament start into another Asian Games cricket title.
