Russia Backs India’s Bid for Permanent UNSC Seat
Russia calls for wider representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America in UN Security Council reforms
UNITED NATIONS, Sep 27: Russia has backed India’s candidature for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov calling for greater representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America in any reform of the UN body.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Lavrov said Moscow’s position was that Security Council reform should not result in additional permanent seats for Western countries, particularly Germany and Japan.
He said Russia supports the candidatures of India and Brazil for permanent membership while stressing that the interests of African countries must also be addressed as part of the reform process.
Lavrov said the UN Security Council should reflect broader regional representation and indicated that Moscow was working with its allies and strategic partners through groupings such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Eurasian Economic Union.
He also highlighted international information security as an emerging area requiring greater global cooperation. According to Lavrov, the United Nations should have a central role in discussions on the issue rather than leaving them to smaller international forums.
