Rahul, Priyanka Booked for Allegedly Entering Akashvani Bhawan Without Permission
Delhi Police files case following Opposition sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan after INDIA bloc march was stopped on October 6.
NEW DELHI, Oct 7: Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and their supporters for allegedly entering Akashvani Bhawan without authorisation during the Opposition’s protest on October 6, officials said on Wednesday.
The case followed a complaint alleging that the two Congress leaders, along with accompanying supporters and other MPs, entered the premises without obtaining the required permission.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were among around 260 people detained by police on Tuesday after an INDIA bloc demonstration against the Election Commission was halted. The protesters subsequently remained inside Akashvani Bhawan for more than eight hours as part of their sit-in.
The Opposition parties have been raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and have opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They have also alleged irregularities in the electoral process under the slogan of “vote chori”.
According to Delhi Police, the INDIA bloc had planned to march from Parliament House towards the Election Commission’s office on Tuesday. Police said the organisers had not submitted an application seeking permission for the proposed march to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi.
As no authorisation had been granted, police stopped the march before it could proceed towards the Election Commission headquarters.
