Mary Millben Alleges ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ Is Funded by Donors in the US
The American singer alleges that US-based donors opposed to Narendra Modi are backing the group, urging young Indians to peacefully oppose what she described as disruptive activities.
Washington, Oct. 14: American singer Mary Millben has alleged that the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is receiving financial support from donors in the United States who oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging young Indians to peacefully protest against what she described as the group’s disruptive activities.
Millben made the remarks on Wednesday as supporters of opposition parties and the CJP continued demonstrations in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a social media post, the 41-year-old singer claimed that CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke and his organisation were receiving support from US-based donors opposed to Modi and his leadership. She did not provide publicly verifiable evidence for the funding allegation in the remarks cited.
Millben alleged that certain donors followed a pattern of targeting conservative political leaders internationally by supporting individuals educated in the United States, who subsequently returned to their home countries and mobilised political movements.
Describing the situation as a moment for political engagement, she urged young Indians to speak out peacefully and oppose what she characterised as efforts to create instability.
She also expressed confidence that Modi would not yield to what she called disruptive forces, referring to his long political career and tenure as prime minister.
Millben said democratic societies should encourage counter-movements that uphold freedom and democratic values, calling for a new generation of Indian voices to organise peaceful demonstrations.
The singer is known in India for performing the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and the devotional song ‘Om Jai Jagdish Hare’. She sang India’s national anthem at an event in the United States in 2023 during Modi’s visit.
Her latest comments come amid continuing political tensions surrounding the revision of electoral rolls and protests demanding accountability from the Election Commission.
