Sachin Pilot Calls Amarinder Warring a ‘Fighter’, Says He Will Play Key Role in Punjab Polls

The Congress leader praises Warring’s organisational efforts following his removal as Punjab party chief and backs new president Pargat Singh ahead of next year’s Assembly elections.

NEW DELHI, October 15: Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot has described Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as a “fighter” and said the outgoing Punjab Congress president would continue to play a significant role in the party’s campaign for the Assembly elections scheduled for early next year.

In an interview with a news agency, Pilot praised Warring’s dedication, energy and contribution to strengthening the Congress organisation during a difficult period. His remarks came less than two weeks after Warring stepped down as Punjab Congress chief following a decision by the party leadership.

Pilot said he had known Warring for around two decades and recognised the work he had done to rebuild the organisation when the party had only 15-16 MLAs in the state.

“Raja Warring, I’ve known for 20 years. He’s a very, very energetic, hardworking young man,” Pilot said, adding that Warring had worked diligently for more than four years to strengthen the party at a challenging time.

The Congress leader acknowledged Warring’s contribution while maintaining that organisational changes were sometimes necessary to prepare the party for upcoming electoral contests.

Warring relinquished the post on October 2, and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh was subsequently appointed as his successor. The leadership change came amid internal differences within the Punjab Congress ahead of a crucial electoral battle against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Pilot rejected suggestions that Warring’s removal reflected a lack of confidence in his abilities, emphasising that the decision was part of the party’s broader organisational strategy.

“He’s a fighter. But sometimes, changes in the organisation happen,” Pilot said, pointing to similar leadership changes in other poll-bound states.

He noted that the Congress had also appointed a new president in Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are scheduled for February, and said such decisions were taken according to the party’s assessment of its political requirements.

Pilot stressed that Warring had made a substantial contribution to the Congress and would remain an important figure in its efforts to regain power in Punjab.

“He has actually contributed a lot to the party and he will continue to play a very, very important role,” he said.

Pilot defends leadership change

Asked whether Warring was no longer considered a suitable candidate to lead the state unit, Pilot said the decision should not be interpreted as a judgment on the outgoing president’s capabilities.

He credited Warring with encouraging young people to participate in politics and challenging the AAP government, adding that several factors were considered before the party leadership decided to appoint new presidents in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Pilot said a change in organisational responsibility did not mean that an outgoing leader had less work to do or would be less committed to the party’s political objectives.

The remarks assume significance amid reports of tensions within the Punjab Congress over the leadership transition. Warring had earlier indicated that he believed Pilot wanted him replaced, although he maintained that he had voluntarily relinquished charge.

At a ceremony marking Pargat Singh’s assumption of office earlier this week, Warring said he might face political setbacks or even be denied an election ticket, but would continue to serve the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

He also pledged full support to Pargat Singh and asserted that the party remained united in its objective of forming the next government in Punjab.

Pargat Singh tasked with strengthening Congress

Pilot expressed confidence in the choice of Pargat Singh as the new Punjab Congress president, highlighting his sporting background and political experience.

Pargat, a former captain of the Indian hockey team and a three-time Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, is expected to help the party connect with younger voters and promote a political message centred on sports, health and fitness.

Pilot said Pargat’s experience as an international hockey player could help him encourage young people to pursue sports and healthy lifestyles rather than become involved in drugs or violence.

He also described Pargat as a well-known public figure whose background could prove useful in leading the organisation during the election campaign.

The Congress leadership appears to be seeking a combination of organisational restructuring and a renewed public outreach strategy as it prepares to challenge the AAP in the state.

Internal differences pose electoral challenge

The leadership change comes at a sensitive time for the Congress, with Assembly elections expected early next year and internal disagreements threatening to complicate its preparations.

Warring had acknowledged on October 11 that several party members had opposed him during his tenure as state president and might continue to disagree with him.

Despite those differences, he has publicly supported Pargat Singh and maintained that the Congress would work collectively to secure victory.

The party now faces the challenge of ensuring that disagreements over leadership do not weaken its campaign or create further divisions among its workers and elected representatives.

Punjab remains a politically competitive state, and the Congress will need to consolidate its organisational network, mobilise supporters and present a coherent alternative to the incumbent government.

Pilot downplays BJP’s prospects in Punjab

Assessing the political contest ahead, Pilot said the BJP did not pose a serious threat to the Congress in Punjab. He indicated that the Shiromani Akali Dal, which is aligned with the BJP, would be a smaller electoral challenger than the AAP.

The Congress is expected to focus much of its campaign on the performance of the AAP government and its ability to deliver on public expectations.

However, the party’s prospects will also depend on its capacity to manage internal differences and establish a clear leadership structure before the election campaign gathers momentum.

Pilot’s endorsement of Warring suggests that the party intends to retain the outgoing president’s support and political influence despite the change at the top.

As the Congress prepares for the Punjab Assembly elections, the leadership will need to balance organisational changes with unity among senior leaders. Whether the new arrangement strengthens the party’s electoral position will become clearer as campaigning intensifies in the coming months.
