HBO Confirms Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas for ‘True Detective’ Season 5
The upcoming instalment will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, with Issa López returning as writer, director and showrunner ahead of production in 2027.
LOS ANGELES, Oct 17: Hollywood actors Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas have been confirmed for the fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology series True Detective, with filming scheduled to begin in 2027.
HBO announced the casting through its social media channels, confirming that the two actors would lead the upcoming instalment. The new season will introduce a fresh investigation and a different setting, continuing the franchise’s tradition of exploring independent crime stories.
According to Variety, Cage will portray Henry Logan, while Banderas will play Rai Garcia. The fifth season will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York. Details about the storyline and the characters’ roles in the investigation have not yet been revealed.
Cage had hinted at his involvement during an appearance at New York Comic Con last week, drawing attention to his upcoming television project before the network made its official announcement.
Known for his performances in films such as Leaving Las Vegas, Con Air, Adaptation, National Treasure, Pig and Dream Scenario, Cage has built a career spanning action, drama, comedy and independent cinema. His role in True Detective will add another major television project to his recent work.
The actor is also associated with Spider-Noir, an upcoming live-action series based on the Marvel character, reflecting his growing presence in television productions.
Banderas, meanwhile, has established himself in both international cinema and television. He received an Emmy nomination for portraying Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in the second season of National Geographic’s anthology series Genius in 2018. His television credits also include Spanish-language productions and appearances earlier in his career.
Issa López, who developed and directed the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, will return to lead the creative team as writer, director and showrunner. Her involvement follows the critical attention generated by the previous instalment, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective first premiered in 2014. The series follows a different investigation each season, generally featuring a new cast of characters and a distinct location. Its debut season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives investigating a series of murders.
Later seasons expanded the anthology’s scope with performances by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, among others.
The franchise has earned significant recognition during its run, receiving 41 Emmy nominations and winning six awards. Its acting honours include awards for McConaughey, Harrelson, Ali and Foster.
With Cage and Banderas joining the cast, the fifth season is expected to bring together two internationally recognised performers for another instalment of the long-running crime drama. Further announcements about supporting cast members, the plot and the release date are awaited.
