‘Chaar Yaar’ Arrives on Prime Video With a Crime Story About Friendship and Survival
The eight episode Hindi series, set in early 2000s Mumbai, follows four middle-class friends whose search for a better life draws them into the world of gangsters, heists and police investigations.
New Delhi, Oct 23: The Hindi crime drama Chaar Yaar premiered on Prime Video on Friday, introducing viewers to four friends whose ambitions take a dangerous turn after a desperate decision pulls them into Mumbai’s criminal underworld.
Set in the early 2000s, the eight-episode series follows Jay, Tony, Saahil and Sameer as they navigate family responsibilities, financial pressures and their hopes of building better lives. Their circumstances lead them into a world of gangsters, car thefts and heists, forcing them to rely on their friendship as the danger around them grows.
The series stars Prayrak Mehta, Saqib Ayub, Purav Jha and Naman Jain in the lead roles. Sai Tamhankar, Sikandar Kher, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Rajesh Tailang, Chunky Panday and Bhagavathi Perumal also feature in important roles.
Directed by Vinay Waikul, the show is written by Sambit Mishra and Saurabh Sawant. It is produced by Pranati Nagarsheth, Niraj Nagarsheth and P.S. Shyam under Pink Window Production Pvt. Ltd., with BBC Studios India involved in its development. Waikul, S. Hussain Zaidi, Mishra and Sawant are credited as creators.
The story begins with four ordinary young men trying to improve their circumstances. Their aspirations are shaped by the pressures familiar to many middle-class families, including financial responsibilities and the desire for greater stability. However, a decision made out of necessity brings them into contact with people whose interests are far more dangerous than they initially realise.
As their situation becomes more complicated, the friends find themselves caught between criminal groups and the police. Their involvement in the underworld exposes them to threats that extend beyond their original intentions, leaving them to deal with the consequences of choices they may not have fully understood.
The series places friendship at the centre of its crime narrative. Each of the four protagonists has a distinct personality, and their contrasting approaches to problems influence how they respond to the situations they encounter. Their relationship is tested as fear, ambition and the need for survival begin to compete with their loyalty to one another.
Jay, played by Prayrak Mehta, is portrayed as a quiet and calculating individual who prefers to think before acting. He is the person his friends turn to when their plans begin to fall apart. His ability to assess situations and prepare for possible outcomes becomes a strength, although the character’s intelligence can also create difficulties as the circumstances around him change.
Mehta said the role appealed to him because it required a substantial transformation. He described Jay as different from characters he had played previously, with the character’s development allowing him to explore multiple aspects of the same person. The actor also highlighted the friendship at the heart of the narrative, saying that the story goes beyond its crime, action and chaos to examine four men attempting to make something of their lives.
Saqib Ayub plays Tony, another member of the group. Ayub said the role offered a different experience from some of his previous action-oriented performances. He was particularly interested in portraying an ordinary Mumbai resident rather than a more flamboyant character.
The production includes car chases, heists and action sequences, placing the friends in increasingly risky situations. These elements provide the pace expected of a crime drama, while the characters’ personal circumstances are intended to keep the story connected to their everyday lives.
Purav Jha, who plays Saahil, described the project as an important step in his acting career after years of creating online content. The series gave him an opportunity to take on a substantial acting role and undergo training for its action sequences. He also spoke about the experience of working with the director and the other lead actors.
Naman Jain plays Sameer, whose ability to find humour in difficult situations adds another dimension to the group. The character brings a different energy to a story filled with tension, but he also faces personal problems as the plot develops.
Jain said he enjoyed exploring the character’s comic side and the contrast between his humour and the increasingly serious events around him. He also noted that the four lead actors developed a natural camaraderie during production, which helped their interactions feel more spontaneous.
The series is directed by Waikul, whose previous work includes crime and drama projects. Its creative team combines the friendship-driven premise with a setting shaped by Mumbai’s criminal landscape in the early 2000s. The period setting allows the narrative to draw on a particular phase of the city’s urban life while following characters whose ambitions lead them into unfamiliar territory.
The involvement of S. Hussain Zaidi among the creators also connects the project with a crime-storytelling tradition focused on the people, networks and circumstances surrounding organised criminal activity. In Chaar Yaar, however, the main emphasis remains on four friends caught in events that grow beyond their control.
The show’s supporting cast brings together actors known for different kinds of roles. Their characters help establish the wider world in which the protagonists find themselves, including the criminal figures and law-enforcement personnel who become part of their struggle.
Inspector Sumati Bhalerao is among the forces closing in on the friends as their involvement in crime deepens. The protagonists must navigate the competing pressures of police pursuit and the demands of gangsters, while trying to protect themselves and preserve their relationships.
The creators have described the series as a story about uncertainty and the unpredictable direction life can take. Waikul said the friends find themselves in circumstances much larger than they had imagined, with their bond becoming central to their efforts to get through the crisis.
This approach gives the show two connected narrative strands: the immediate suspense of criminal activity and the personal consequences of becoming involved in it. The heists and chases provide external conflict, while the friends’ differing personalities and ambitions shape the decisions that move the plot forward.
The release also highlights the continuing presence of multi-episode Hindi crime dramas on streaming platforms. An eight-episode format gives the creators room to develop several characters, gradually reveal relationships and build complications across the story rather than resolving every conflict within a single film.
Prime Video has positioned Chaar Yaar as a Hindi-language original for viewers in India and international markets. The series is available exclusively on the platform in Hindi, with its premiere scheduled for October 23 across India and more than 240 countries and territories.
For the four lead actors, the project offers different career opportunities. Mehta takes on a character whose careful planning becomes both an advantage and a vulnerability; Ayub explores a comparatively grounded role; Jha moves further into scripted acting after establishing himself through content creation; and Jain brings humour to a narrative driven by danger.
The ensemble and the Mumbai setting are central to the series’ identity. Rather than following a single investigator or gangster, the drama uses the experiences of four friends to explore how ordinary ambitions can collide with a criminal world that operates by different rules.
As the story progresses, the group must confront the effects of their initial decision and determine how far they are willing to go to protect one another. The tension lies not only in whether they can escape the people pursuing them, but also in whether their friendship can withstand the choices they are forced to make.
Chaar Yaar began streaming on Prime Video on October 23, 2026. With its blend of crime, action, humour and friendship, the series presents a story about four young men whose search for a better future leads them into circumstances they never expected.
