Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu Capture Hylo Open Titles in Impressive Indian Double
Sen defeats Jonatan Christie in straight games to end his title drought, while Sindhu overcomes Line Kjaersfeldt to claim her second championship of 2026.
SAARBRUCKEN, Nov 1: Indian badminton enjoyed a memorable day at the Hylo Open in Germany on Sunday as Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu captured the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, delivering a significant boost to India’s campaign on the international circuit.
Sen produced an impressive performance in the men’s singles final, defeating Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie 21-17, 21-10 to claim his seventh career title. The victory was particularly important for the Indian shuttler as it ended his title drought this season and provided a timely confidence boost after a challenging period.
The World No. 14 demonstrated excellent control, attacking ability and defensive resilience against Christie, who entered the final with a 4-3 advantage in their previous head-to-head meetings.
The opening game proved competitive, with Sen establishing an early advantage before allowing his opponent to narrow the gap. Despite losing some of his initial momentum, the Indian recovered at a crucial stage and prevented Christie from turning the contest around.
Sen relied on his powerful smashes, quick movement around the net and accurate placement to put the Indonesian under pressure. His ability to defend difficult attacks and convert opportunities into points proved decisive.
After taking the opening game 21-17, Sen raised his level considerably in the second. Christie struggled to find consistency, making errors while attempting to challenge the Indian’s defensive game.
Sen maintained control throughout the second game and completed the match with a convincing 21-10 victory.
Speaking after the triumph, Sen expressed satisfaction with his performance, particularly after experiencing difficulties during the season. He said winning the tournament was important for his confidence, adding that his performances in the final rounds had been encouraging.
The title marked Sen’s first tournament victory since the Australia Open last season. His campaign had included several disappointing early exits, making the German tournament an important opportunity to regain his competitive rhythm.
Sen’s route to the championship also included an impressive semifinal performance against Toma Junior Popov. His ability to overcome strong opponents in consecutive matches underlined the improvement in his form during the tournament.
The Indian shuttler will now return home for a short break before resuming his preparations for upcoming international competitions.
Sindhu also delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s singles final, defeating Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt 21-12, 21-14 to secure the championship.
The former world champion controlled the proceedings from the beginning, using her experience and attacking game to keep Kjaersfeldt under pressure. Her consistent shot-making and ability to maintain longer rallies helped her establish an advantage in both games.
The victory marked Sindhu’s second title of the 2026 season, following her success at the Japan Open in July. She had also reached the final of the French Open the previous week, highlighting her growing consistency on the international circuit.
Her latest triumph is expected to improve her world ranking to sixth in the next update, reflecting an encouraging period in her comeback campaign.
Sindhu credited her coaching staff and support team for helping her regain confidence and maintain consistency. She also acknowledged that there was still room for improvement despite the encouraging results.
The double triumph was particularly significant for Indian badminton, with two established players demonstrating their ability to compete successfully against leading international opponents.
For Sen, the championship represented a return to winning ways after months of inconsistent results. For Sindhu, it reinforced her position among the leading players in women’s badminton.
Their victories in Germany provided India with a memorable conclusion to the tournament and strengthened expectations ahead of the remaining international competitions of the season.
