CBSE Announces Practical Exam Schedule for Class 10 and 12 Winter-Bound Schools

Practical examinations, project assessments and internal evaluations will be conducted from November 9 to December 6, with schools directed to follow the board's prescribed guidelines for the 2026–27 academic session.

NEW DELHI, Nov 5: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the schedule and examination guidelines for practical examinations, project assessments and internal assessments for Classes 10 and 12 in winter-bound schools for the 2026–27 academic session.

According to the board’s latest instructions, practical examinations will be conducted between November 9 and December 6, 2026. The announcement is particularly important for students studying in schools located in regions where severe winter conditions affect the regular academic calendar.

The board has clarified that the schedule applies specifically to winter-bound schools. Separate instructions will be issued for schools following the regular academic session, ensuring that examination arrangements take into account the different academic calendars followed across the country.

The announcement is part of CBSE’s preparations for the 2027 board examinations and is intended to ensure that practical assessments and internal evaluation activities are completed within the prescribed period.

Practical examinations form an important component of the assessment process for students enrolled in science, computer science and other subjects involving laboratory work or practical activities. These assessments allow students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts through experiments, demonstrations, project work and other subject-related exercises.

For Class 12 students, practical marks contribute to their overall board examination results. Similarly, Class 10 students are evaluated through internal assessments and practical components wherever applicable under the prescribed subject structure.

Schools have been instructed to make appropriate arrangements for conducting the examinations and follow the board’s directions concerning the assessment process.

The guidelines also address the formation of student batches, uploading of photographs, submission of marks and maintenance of attendance records. These requirements are intended to ensure that the examination process remains properly documented and that assessment information is submitted through the prescribed procedures.

The formation of student batches is particularly important for schools with large enrolments, as practical examinations often require students to be assessed in smaller groups because of limited laboratory space, equipment and availability of subject teachers.

Schools will need to organise their examination schedules accordingly so that all eligible candidates receive an opportunity to complete their practical assessments within the stipulated period.

The board’s instructions regarding photographs and attendance are also intended to strengthen the verification process. Proper documentation can help institutions maintain accurate records and address discrepancies that may arise during the evaluation process.

Students have been advised to remain in contact with their respective schools for information regarding their individual examination dates, reporting times, subject-wise arrangements and other instructions.

The announcement does not mean that every student will appear for practical examinations on the same day. Individual schools will prepare their schedules according to the subjects offered, the number of candidates and the facilities available.

Schools will also need to ensure that students are informed about the materials and equipment they may be required to bring for their practical assessments. Candidates should carefully follow the instructions provided by their teachers and examination coordinators.

The practical examination process is designed to assess students beyond their performance in written papers. In subjects involving experiments and laboratory activities, the evaluation provides an opportunity to examine students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.

For instance, science students may be required to perform experiments, record observations, prepare laboratory records and answer questions related to the activities conducted during the examination. Project-based subjects may involve the presentation and assessment of completed assignments.

The board’s decision to announce the schedule in advance is expected to help schools prepare their laboratories, allocate teachers and arrange examination facilities.

Winter-bound institutions face particular scheduling challenges because of geographical conditions and differences in the timing of academic sessions. Conducting practical assessments before the onset of the harshest winter conditions can help schools complete important academic requirements without disrupting their regular teaching schedules.

The December 6 deadline will therefore be significant for schools in regions where winter vacations and weather-related interruptions can affect educational activities.

The announcement also comes as students across the country prepare for the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations scheduled for 2027. Practical assessments, project submissions and internal evaluations are important stages in this preparation process.

Students are expected to complete their practical records and project work within the timelines communicated by their schools. Any delay in completing the required activities could create difficulties during the final stages of assessment.

Teachers and school authorities will also play an important role in ensuring that the examination process is conducted smoothly. They will need to coordinate subject-wise arrangements, maintain records and ensure that marks are uploaded accurately.

The CBSE has been placing emphasis on transparent assessment procedures and timely submission of examination-related information. The latest guidelines reinforce the need for schools to follow standardised processes while conducting practical and internal evaluations.

For parents, the announcement provides an opportunity to help students organise their academic preparation and avoid last-minute difficulties. Students should pay attention to school notices and ensure that they understand the requirements for their respective subjects.

The board’s clarification regarding the applicability of the schedule is equally important. Since the present notification covers only winter-bound schools, students in other institutions should wait for the separate instructions applicable to their academic session rather than assume that the same dates will apply to them.

The practical examination schedule is one of the important academic announcements ahead of the 2027 board examinations. With the assessment window beginning on November 9, schools will now need to complete their preparations and ensure compliance with the board’s instructions.

The timely completion of these assessments will allow students and institutions to focus on the remaining academic requirements before the commencement of the main written examinations.
