Vijay Sethupathi Makes History as First Indian Presenter at International Emmy Awards
The Tamil actor will take the global stage at the 54th International Emmy Awards in New York on November 23, marking a significant milestone for Indian entertainment.
NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Tamil cinema star Vijay Sethupathi is set to achieve a significant milestone for Indian entertainment after being named among the presenters at the 54th International Emmy Awards, scheduled to take place in New York on November 23.
With this recognition, Sethupathi will become the first Indian to present an award at the prestigious international television ceremony, highlighting the growing presence of Indian artists on major global entertainment platforms.
The development was reported on Thursday and subsequently received wider attention across the Indian entertainment industry. His participation is being viewed as an important moment for Indian cinema and television, particularly at a time when regional-language productions are increasingly finding audiences beyond their traditional markets.
According to reports, Kavita Gupta, a board member of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS), played an important role in bringing Sethupathi to the international event. Gupta has previously supported Indian representation at the ceremony and was instrumental in Vir Das becoming the first Indian host of the International Emmy Awards in 2024.
Sethupathi’s selection reflects the increasing recognition of Indian performers and filmmakers within the international entertainment community. His career, built across Tamil cinema and projects in other languages, has earned him a reputation for choosing diverse roles rather than restricting himself to a particular genre or conventional star image.
The actor has established himself through performances in films ranging from intense crime dramas and emotional stories to commercial entertainers. His ability to portray complicated characters with considerable realism has helped him develop a strong following among audiences and critics.
One of his most widely recognised films internationally is the 2024 action thriller Maharaja. The film attracted considerable attention after its theatrical release and subsequently reached a wider audience through streaming platforms.
Its performance in China further strengthened its international profile. Reports have indicated that the film collected approximately Rs 91.65 crore in the Chinese theatrical market, generating renewed interest in its storytelling and commercial potential.
The success also opened opportunities for an American adaptation, with the remake rights reportedly acquired by a Hollywood agency. Sethupathi has previously indicated that discussions surrounding a sequel were also underway, although further details about the proposed project have not been announced.
The actor was most recently seen in Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, a project that received attention for its portrayal of a gangster’s moral redemption.
His upcoming projects include Mani Ratnam’s Inji Vellam, featuring Sai Pallavi, and Pocket Novel, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, in which he will share screen space with Raj B Shetty and Malavika Mohanan.
India’s presence at the 2026 International Emmy Awards
Sethupathi’s participation comes at a particularly important time for Indian television and digital entertainment, with the country securing nominations in two significant categories at this year’s awards.
The SonyLIV sports drama Real Kashmir Football Club has been nominated in the Best Drama Series category. The series, directed by Mahesh Mathai and Rajesh Mapuskar, features Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Manav Kaul in key roles.
The nomination has brought attention to a story rooted in the sporting and social landscape of Kashmir, placing an Indian regional narrative alongside productions from several international markets.
India has also secured recognition in the Best Comedy Series category through comedian Vir Das’s Netflix special Vir Das: Fool Volume. The nomination further strengthens the country’s representation in international television and streaming entertainment.
The competition includes productions from countries such as the United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina, France and Spain, demonstrating the international range of this year’s nominees.
The International Emmy Awards recognise excellence in television programming produced outside the United States. Their categories cover drama, comedy, documentaries, current affairs, performances, children’s programming and several other areas of television production.
The 54th edition of the ceremony will be held in Manhattan, New York City, on November 23. The event is expected to bring together actors, directors, producers, television executives and creative professionals from across the world.
A milestone for Indian entertainment
Sethupathi’s appointment as a presenter represents a broader development in the international visibility of Indian entertainment. While Indian actors have previously attended international film festivals and award ceremonies, his role at the International Emmys marks a distinct opportunity to participate in the presentation of one of the industry’s major global television honours.
Indian films and series have increasingly expanded their reach through international distribution, streaming services and collaborations with overseas production companies. Regional-language content, in particular, has gained greater visibility as audiences become more receptive to stories from different cultural backgrounds.
Sethupathi’s achievement, alongside India’s nominations this year, adds another chapter to that growing international presence.
His appearance at the November ceremony will therefore carry significance beyond an individual career milestone, drawing attention to the creative talent emerging from India’s diverse film and television industries.
