04-05-2023 : Amritpal Singh, a radical preacher associated with the pro-Khalistan group ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD), is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam. On Thursday, his wife, Kirandeep Kaur, along with family members of other WPD activists, visited him in the jail. According to officials, Kaur and the other family members entered the jail complex at around 1 pm and left at 3.25 pm. They had arrived in Dibrugarh by flight and were expected to stay there for the day.
Singh was arrested in Punjab on April 23 and flown to the Dibrugarh Central Jail on a special flight. Along with him, nine other members of the WPD group are currently lodged at the Assam jail. The other inmates are Daljit Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla.
Security in and around the jail premises has been heightened since March 19 when the first batch of four WPD members were brought here. The WPD group, which supports the creation of Khalistan, has been linked to several terrorist activities in the past. The arrest of its members is seen as a major crackdown on separatist groups in the country.
