Rain in Jammu and Kashmir expected to be light to moderate : MeT

Cold weather grips Jammu and Kashmir after rainfall and snowfall

07-05-2023: The Meteorological Department has forecasted widespread light to moderate rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours. Today, most places are experiencing mainly clear to partly cloudy weather, but tomorrow there is a likelihood of rain coupled with thunderstorms and lightning in most areas of Kashmir and many areas of the Jammu region. The Met Office has also predicted hailstorms with gusty winds in a few places. On May 8, there could be rain or thunderstorms in many places of J&K with hailstorms and gusty winds in one or two places. The weather is expected to remain dry from May 9-12.

The Met Department has advised farmers to postpone spraying of orchards and harvesting of crops until May 8. Tourists are advised to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as the weather is expected to be colder until May 8. The rainfall has resulted in a drop in both minimum and maximum temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures running 3-5 degrees Celsius below normal. The plains received rains while the upper reaches experienced snowfall on Saturday.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which was 4.2 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius. It also received 6.8mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours until 0830 hours. The maximum temperature in Srinagar was also running 5.1 degrees Celsius below normal of 23.6 degrees Celsius. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of 5.2 degrees Celsius, 4.0 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, a famous tourist spot in South Kashmir, recorded a low of 2.1 degrees Celsius, which was 3.4 degrees Celsius below normal. Kokernag recorded a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg, a famous ski resort in North Kashmir, had a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius, which was 4.8 degrees Celsius below normal. Kupwara recorded a low of 6.3 degrees Celsius, which was 3.0 degrees Celsius below normal on Sunday, according to the Met Office.
