Farooq Abdullah urges opposition to support strong regional parties in 2024 Lok Sabha polls

07-05-2023 : In a statement made on Sunday, veteran politician and former Union minister Farooq Abdullah urged the main opposition parties to support strong regional parties in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He suggested a “one against one” strategy to take on the BJP, where opposition parties should not create hurdles for regional leaders who are doing well in their respective states. Abdullah emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among opposition parties and called for a collective effort to defeat the BJP.

Abdullah highlighted the alleged misuse of central agencies such as the CBI, ED, and the Income Tax Department, and urged future governments not to use these agencies to browbeat the Opposition. He stressed the importance of strong and vibrant opposition in a democratic country and expressed his concern about India’s declining ranking in the World Press Freedom Index. Abdullah believes that a free and independent press is essential for the functioning of a democracy and called for greater respect for press freedom in India.

Although Abdullah did not indicate whether he had discussed his approach with other opposition leaders, he expressed hope that they would consider his suggestion. Abdullah’s statement comes at a time when the opposition is grappling with internal disagreements and a lack of coherence, making it difficult to pose a serious challenge to the BJP. With the Lok Sabha elections less than a year away, the opposition will need to work together to present a credible alternative to the ruling party. Abdullah’s call for unity and collaboration among opposition parties could provide a much-needed boost to their electoral prospects.
