Brij Bhushan Singh Denies Allegations, Blames Congress for Conspiracy in Sexual Harassment Controversy

11-06-2023 : Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers. Despite these allegations, Singh announced that he will be contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Kaisarganj constituency and stated that he is awaiting the court’s verdict before commenting on the wrestlers’ protest.

During a rally in Balpur, Singh chose not to address the wrestlers’ protest directly but instead targeted the Congress party, focusing on topics such as the Emergency, the Ram temple issue, the 1984 anti-Sikhs riots, and other contentious matters. When asked why he was not commenting on the wrestlers’ protest and what he was waiting for, Singh simply responded, “I am waiting for the court’s verdict.”

Regarding his potential candidacies for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh confirmed that he will definitely contest from the Kaisarganj constituency. He has previously represented Kaisarganj three times as an MP, once as a Samajwadi Party member from 2009 to 2014. Additionally, he has won the general elections in 2004 from the Balrampur Lok Sabha seat, and in 1991 and 1999 from the Gonda seat, all on BJP tickets. Currently, he is serving his sixth term as a Lok Sabha MP.

During the rally, Singh commenced his speech with an Urdu couplet, expressing his experience of enduring hardships and criticism. The rally was organized to commemorate the completion of nine years of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

Despite facing potential action from the Delhi Police, who have recorded statements from over 200 individuals in connection with the case against him and plan to file a chargesheet by June 15, Singh has remained defiant. The protesting wrestlers accused him of using his influence to pressure sexual harassment victims into changing their statements, and they threatened to resume their protest if decisive action was not taken against him by June 15.

Singh has vehemently denied the allegations against him and claimed that Congress leaders from Haryana conspired to defame him because of the reforms he implemented as the WFI chief.

During his speech, Singh also expressed confidence that the BJP would come to power again in the 2024 elections, stating that no force in the world could stop them.

In his criticism of the Congress party, Singh cited instances from history, such as the division of the country in 1947 during the Congress’ rule, the Chinese aggression in 1962 when the Congress was in power, and the release of Pakistani prisoners of war in 1971 by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi without settling previous disputes. He also highlighted the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 and the anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

Singh showered praise on Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that their leadership had allowed the BJP to reclaim the Kashmir region where Syama Prasad Mookerjee had sacrificed his life. He also criticized the Congress for hindering the resolution of the Ayodhya title suit and for impeding the Supreme Court’s work to save a convicted terrorist from capital punishment.

Singh further mentioned the Congress’ skepticism regarding the surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army after the Uri and Pulwama attacks, as well as their doubts about the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Indian scientists.

Earlier in the day, Singh, accompanied by Tarabganj MLA Prem Narayan Pandey and Colonelganj MLA Ajay Kumar Singh, covered a distance of nearly 40 kilometers to reach the rally venue. Despite the scorching temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius, a large number of BJP workers and supporters attended the event.

The higher education minister for Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, also praised the work of the Yogi Adityanath and Narendra Modi-led administration, saying that wrongdoers have been brought to justice.

Singh had earlier asked for permission to host a rally on June 5 from the Ayodhya district administration, but his request was turned down. Later, he stated at the Ram Katha Park that the “Jan Chetna Maharally” had been postponed due to the continuing police inquiry into the wrestlers’ charges.
