Omar Abdullah Looks Forward to Supreme Court Hearing on Article 370 Abrogation

03-07-2023 : Omar Abdullah, a prominent leader of the National Conference, expressed his anticipation for the Supreme Court hearing on petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370. This development comes nearly four years after the Indian government revoked Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a tweet, Omar Abdullah welcomed the constitution of a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and expressed his eagerness for the hearings to commence. The hearing is scheduled to begin on July 11, and the bench will address a batch of pleas challenging the decision to abrogate Article 370.

The notice issued on the apex court’s website stated that the five-judge bench would consider the pleas and issue appropriate directions. This hearing holds significant importance as it pertains to the constitutional validity of the decision to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.

On August 5, 2019, the central government took the decision to revoke Article 370, leading to the bifurcation of the state into two separate Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The move stirred widespread debate and triggered a range of reactions both within and outside the region.
