The preservation of the quality and freshness of perishable goods including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products is largely dependent on the cold chain industry, which includes cold storage facilities and refrigerated transportation. In J&K, where agriculture forms a significant part of the economy, establishing a robust cold chain infrastructure is paramount. Beyond just reducing losses, this infrastructure enables farmers to tap into larger markets, reaching beyond UT and national boundaries. It provides local entrepreneurs the opportunity to invest in vital components of the cold chain, creating job opportunities and contributing to the region’s economic growth. He also highlighted the remarkable improvement in the “Ease of Doing Business” in J&K. This transformation was achieved through increased transparency, accountability, and digitalization. With around 15 products receiving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in J&K, local products now carry an extra layer of prestige and value. These GI tags, bestowed upon products such as saffron, pashmina, and basmati rice, not only attest to their quality but also highlight their unique cultural and historical significance. One noteworthy initiative discussed during the conclave was the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP). This program, scheduled to span the next five years, aims to revolutionize farming practices in the region. It promotes agricultural innovation, knowledge acquisition, and the establishment of agri-business incubation centers for start-ups. HADP aligns with the government’s vision of fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance. It holds the promise of not only improving farming practices but also providing a Launchpad for young entrepreneurs to venture into agri-businesses. A the same time, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, the Chief Secretary, emphasized the potential of these initiatives in doubling farmers’ income. He particularly highlighted the High-Density Agriculture Scheme, expected to double apple production in the region within the next few years. Additionally, under the “One District One Product” (ODOP) scheme, various districts in J&K have begun exporting their unique products to global markets, further boosting economic prosperity in these regions. Further, DigitalJ&K, another remarkable achievement highlighted during the conclave, has revolutionized the way government services are delivered. J&K has achieved the top rank in providing services through digital means, with 1033 services available online. This shift of power from the government to the people has empowered the residents of J&K, making them active participants in governance. The conclave also placed significant emphasis on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainability. Given the region’s diverse agro-climatic conditions and sensitivity to climate change, sustainable and climate-smart agriculture practices are vital for farmers to adapt to changing conditions. The recent G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration prioritized climate-resilient crops, accelerated innovations, and increased investment to enhance productivity and reduce waste. These principles are in line with J&K’s efforts to promote sustainable farming practices and reduce the ecological footprint of agriculture. Entrepreneurs in J&K have a critical role to play in promoting sustainable agriculture. By investing in innovative technologies and practices, they can increase profitability while contributing to environmental conservation. The adoption of niche, less water-intensive, and high-value crops is one-way entrepreneurs can align their businesses with sustainability goals. As such, therefore, entrepreneurs should explore opportunities for export and tap into international markets, especially for products that have received the GI tag. This will not only boost the local economy but also enhance the reputation of J&K on the global stage.
