26-09-2023 :  The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) extends its full support to the 22 students of Government Degree College (GDC) Ramban, who are on a hunger strike to demand their right to swap major and minor subjects in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020).

The NEP-2020 unequivocally grants students the prerogative to change their major and minor subjects during the 3rd semester. ABVP echoes the students’ call to swap Geography as their major subject with Political Science as their minor subject.

The ABVP emphasizes the importance of student-centric policies that promote academic autonomy and encourage students to shape their educational journeys as per their aspirations. The demand put forth by these 22 students mirrors the very essence of NEP-2020, emphasizing flexibility and choice in education.

We urge the concerned authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with the students, considering their legitimate request and upholding the principles of NEP-2020. ABVP stands ready to mediate and facilitate a resolution that ensures the students’ rights are respected while adhering to the guidelines of the NEP-2020.

 State Secretary  Akshi Billowria acknowledges that while subject reallocation may be a viable option in plain terrain areas like Jammu, it may present challenges and logistical complexities in hilly districts of Jammu Kashmir due to various contextual factors.The topographical and infrastructural differences in hilly regions necessitate a nuanced approach to educational policies, ensuring that any changes made are in the best interest of the students and the education system as a whole.She also said that hunger strike will continue till demands of students are not fulfilled.If the demand of students is not fullfilled ABVP will protest throughout state.
