Chilled to the Bone: Kashmir Valley Grapples with Sub-Zero Temperatures as Pahalgam Hits Season's Coldest Night
Srinagar, 19-12-2023 : The bone-chilling grip of freezing cold has tightened its hold on the Kashmir Valley, with Pahalgam experiencing the coldest night of the season at -6.9°C and Srinagar shivering at -3.7°C on Tuesday. According to officials from the Meteorological Center Srinagar, Pahalgam’s temperature marked a significant drop from the previous night, registering at -6.9°C, 2.5°C below normal for this tourist hotspot in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Several areas in south Kashmir, including Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam, witnessed their coldest night of the season, with temperatures ranging from -3.2°C to -6.8°C.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a temperature of -3.7°C, 2.2°C below the seasonal norm. The maximum temperature in Srinagar was slightly higher than the previous day, standing at 2.0°C above the normal of 9.0°C.
Gulmarg, North Kashmir’s renowned ski resort, experienced a milder night at -6.6°C, an improvement from the previous day’s -8.0°C, which had been the coldest of the season. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway plunged to -4.2°C, Kokernag recorded -3.1°C, and Kupwara dipped to -3.1°C.
The Meteorological Office predicts dry weather until December 23, followed by generally cloudy conditions with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches from December 24-26. Overall, there is no significant weather activity expected until December 26. The region remains in the icy grip of winter, with residents and authorities bracing for the continuing cold spell.
