Opposition Leaders Propose Mallikarjun Kharge as Prime Ministerial Candidate in Crucial Delhi Meeting

Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal Suggest Kharge for INDIA Bloc’s PM Face

New Delhi, 19-12-2023 : In a momentous development, key leaders of the opposition alliance convened in Delhi to deliberate on strategies for the impending 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The joint proposal from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal named Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as the prime ministerial candidate for the opposition INDIA bloc. Despite reservations, Kharge underscored the primacy of winning elections before finalizing leadership roles, affirming his dedication to serving the downtrodden.

The pivotal meeting, attended by 28 opposition leaders, aimed at formulating cohesive campaign strategies and negotiating seat-sharing agreements. A dozen parties reportedly rallied behind Kharge’s candidacy. The suspension of 141 opposition MPs in both Houses of Parliament emerged as a central concern, eliciting condemnation from leaders spanning party affiliations.

The INDIA bloc, initially boasting a strength of 138 in Lok Sabha, now only comprises 43 MPs due to mass suspensions over the past two days. This meeting assumes added significance in the aftermath of the Congress party’s recent electoral setbacks in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

The Congress party underscored what it perceives as an assault on democracy by the Modi government, stressing the imperative of unity to safeguard democratic principles. This gathering marks the fourth meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, with prior sessions convened in Patna, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
