In an interview with the Financial Times, Modi asserted that if provided with any information, the Indian government is prepared to thoroughly investigate the situation, emphasizing their commitment to the rule of law.
Modi conveyed that India has consistently expressed deep concern about certain extremist groups operating abroad. He pointed out that these elements, purportedly acting under the guise of freedom of expression, have been involved in intimidation and incitement of violence. The Prime Minister underscored the significance of adhering to the rule of law in dealing with such matters.
Regarding the broader context of India-US relations, Modi emphasized the strong bipartisan support for strengthening the bilateral relationship. He maintained that it is inappropriate to connect isolated incidents with the diplomatic ties between the two nations. Modi characterized the relationship between India and the United States as mature and stable, highlighting the need to avoid undue implications based on individual events.
The allegations against Nikhil Gupta involve claims by US authorities that he agreed to pay $100,000 to an assassin to eliminate the Sikh separatist leader residing in New York City, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Gupta, a 52-year-old Indian citizen, was apprehended in the Czech Republic on June 30 at the request of the US. He faces charges of murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, with each charge carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
In response to the serious allegations, the Indian government promptly formed a high-level team to conduct an investigation into the purported plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The Prime Minister’s remarks underline India’s commitment to thoroughly examine the matter and uphold the principles of justice.
