UGC Urges Universities to Embrace Handloom Robes for Convocations, Fostering Comfort and National Pride
New Delhi, 18-01-2024 : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has emphasized once again that universities should contemplate adopting ceremonial robes crafted from handloom fabrics for special events like convocations, as conveyed by officials. This directive follows previous communications from the UGC in 2015 and 2019 addressing universities on this matter. The UGC underscores that attire fashioned from handloom fabrics offers enhanced comfort in India’s climate and fosters a sense of pride.
In a letter, UGC Secretary Manish R Joshi acknowledged that, in response to the UGC’s recommendation, several universities have already made the switch to handloom fabrics for ceremonial attire during their annual convocations. However, it has been observed that certain universities have not yet updated their ceremonial dress code for convocations.
Joshi urged universities to reconsider their choice and opt for handloom fabrics as ceremonial attire, emphasizing that such a shift would not only instill a sense of pride in being Indian but also contribute to the promotion of the handloom industry in the country. This industry plays a crucial role in generating employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.
