Weather Forecast: MeT Warns of Rain and Snow Across Jammu and Kashmir, Urges Preparedness for Potential Disruptions

Srinagar,28-03-2024 : The plains of Kashmir experienced light rainfall as the Meteorological Department forecasts further precipitation over the next 48 hours. According to the MeT, light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected across Jammu and Kashmir during this period, with cloudy weather prevailing.

On Thursday, the MeT office issued warnings of intermittent light rain or snow in some areas, particularly on March 31. However, dry weather conditions are anticipated from April 1 to 5.

The fluctuating weather patterns may disrupt surface transport, especially over crucial mountain passes, prompting the MeT to advise travelers and tourists to plan their journeys accordingly, particularly on March 30. Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural operations from March 27 to March 31 due to the inclement weather.

The MeT office also cautioned about the possibility of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones during this period. Thunderstorms, lightning activity, hailstorms, and gusty winds are also expected from March 27 to 30.

In the past 24 hours until 0830 hours on Thursday, various regions of Kashmir received varying amounts of rainfall, with Srinagar recording 0.1mm, Qazigund 1.6mm, Pahalgam 4.4mm, Kupwara 2.0mm, Kokernag 0.6mm, and Gulmarg 3.4mm.

Despite the cloud cover, night temperatures in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley remained above normal, recording 3–5 degrees Celsius higher than usual. Daytime temperatures were also 5–6 degrees Celsius above normal compared to the previous day.

Srinagar recorded a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius, marking a 3.7-degree Celsius increase from the previous night. Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination, registered a low of 5.0 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg, renowned for skiing, settled at 2.0 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT office.
