Rahul Gandhi Rallies in Poonch and Srinagar, Farooq Abdullah Expected to Share Stage in Srinagar
JAMMU, Sept 22: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), is set to visit Surankote in Poonch district and Srinagar tomorrow to address public rallies. In Surankote, he will speak at a public meeting around 11:30 a.m. to support Shahnawaz Chaudhary, the Congress-National Conference alliance candidate and AICC secretary. Following this, Gandhi will fly to Srinagar in the afternoon to address another rally in support of JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra at Central Shalteng in Srinagar. After completing his engagements, he will return to Delhi in the evening, according to a party spokesman.
Notably, Gandhi recently addressed two rallies, one in Sangaldan (Banihal constituency) for former JKPCC president and party candidate Vikar Rasool Wani, and another in Dooru, Anantnag, for AICC general secretary and candidate Ghulam Ahmed Mir. Dr. Farooq Abdullah, National Conference president and former Chief Minister of J&K, is also expected to join Gandhi on stage at the Shalteng rally in Srinagar city, where he will share the dais and address the crowd.
In addition to Rahul Gandhi’s participation, several senior AICC leaders, including Bharatsinh Solanki, Dr. Nasir Hussain, and Alka Lamba, have already arrived in Jammu and Kashmir to campaign for Congress candidates. The Congress party has been ramping up its outreach across the region ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. On his social media platform X, Kharge emphasized that the Congress party’s agenda for the region is focused on social justice and economic empowerment. “The Indian National Congress pledges to safeguard the Constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Our progressive development agenda is for everyone,” Kharge stated, highlighting the party’s “seven guarantees” for the people of the Union Territory.
These views were mirrored by Congress national secretary KC Venugopal, who emphasized that the party would give the restoration of full statehood top priority if elected to power in Jammu and Kashmir. “As J&K votes to shape its destiny after a decade, the Congress and its alliance are committed to putting the people of J&K at the center of policy-making,” Venugopal stated on X. He went on to say that the party wants to eradicate pervasive corruption, address misgovernance, help the poor, farmers, and youth, and provide a progressive agenda that would change the region.
